Ibrox Noise has learned that Dan Purdy does not appear to have quite left the Rangers building as yet. As we all know, Rangers secured the services of former Everton head of recruitment Purdy around January 2025. He joined as technical director and took over chief of recruitment after the exit of Kevin Thelwell.
Indeed, Purdy’s own LinkedIn confirms he remains in position.
It was announced over a month ago that he would be stepping down. However, he would be helping the transition to his successor and to a new structure. It all went very silent after that. We have had no information to confirm that Dan Purdy has actually left Rangers as yet.
Purdy, of course, was not a popular individual around Govan. Rangers fans often put a lot of blame squarely on his shoulders. He was, after all, technical director and therefore chief of recruitment and Rangers’ work there was heavily debased.
For the bulk of Russell Martin and Danny Röhl’s tenures at Ibrox, Purdy was heavily blamed. He was a former and present colleague and ally of Kevin Thelwell at Everton and he was also considered a major part of Rangers’ dire recruitment.
However, with things going a little better on the pitch, the confirmation regarding Purdy’s previously urgent exit has gone silent. That improvement owes as much to Celtic’s collapse as Rangers’ own success.
There is no evidence whatsoever that Purdy has indeed left the building. We’re not quite sure what the transition aspect was all about, or indeed if there even was one.
It’s a very strange state of affairs. It’s unclear if he’s even still registered as a Rangers employee or not.
What is for sure is that when things go better on the pitch, there’s less blame aimed at the board and players. This applies to almost all football clubs.
With Rangers being so poor over the last 15 years, a lot of blame has been thrown at boards and various hierarchies.
As soon as things go better on the pitch, the board becomes invisible.
This is what Walter Smith was able to do during both of his eras at Rangers. Success was so regular that no one cared who the suits were. Nor did anyone particularly care what they offered the club.
But, of course, things have not gone so well over the last 15 years. Consequently, the suits will always get it, rightly or wrongly.
And Purdy was definitely a major target until fairly recently.
We will see in due course if there is ever a proper confirmed change in his position.
