Derby County 0-4 Norwich City: Match report, player ratings

Philippe Clement’s squad served up a power-packed display to bag a third straight league victory, and turn up the heat on under-pressure Rams’ rival John Eustace.

Anthony Musaba pounced to put Norwich in front before Paris Maghoma’s precision finish doubled the visitors lead for his third goal in three games.

Adventurous full back, Darlin Yongwa, rifled home a third prior to the interval but it was fit-again striker Makama who applied the gloss finish.

The powerhouse forward crashed a shot against the underside of the bar from outside the area to complete the rout, and grab his second goal of the season since a series of foot injuries curtailed his meteoric rise.

Clement made two changes from the starting line up that hit back to beat Watford 3-2 in the Championship at the weekend.

Harry Darling and Jose Cordoba continued their job share in partnering Ruairi McConville at the heart of the City backline. Darling replaced the Panamanian international, with Yongwa preferred to Ben Chrisene at left back.

Sam Field captained the side again alongside Jacob Wright in central midfield, with Mathias Kvistgaarden leading the line after his headline-grabbing shift against Watford.

Fellow Dane Oscar Schwartau was included on the bench after he missed the Hornets’ win with a neural (nerve) issue. But there was no Kenny McLean (ankle) or Pelle Mattsson (hamstring) for the second consecutive game.

McLean visited a specialist last week after a reaction to his recent comeback at Charlton, and was left out of the Scotland squad for upcoming friendlies announced earlier on Tuesday.

Derby were captained by the Canaries’ one-time FA Youth Cup winner, Carlton Morris, with Eustace’s struggling side bidding for a first home win of the season.

McConville had to be alert inside the opening minutes to head clear, after Max Johnston had got on the outside of Andre Brooks.

Jack Stacey made his first attacking foray in the fourth minute before clipping a cross to the back post for Kvistgaarden, who initially chested the ball but tumbled in the box to trigger optimistic penalty appeals from the away end.

Musaba then unleashed an angled shot that flew wide of Jacob Widell Zetterstrom’s far post from an opening Wright corner.

But the on-loan Fenerbahce winger did not have to wait long to get on the scoresheet, when he reacted sharply to lash a rebound into the net in the eighth minute, after Zetterstrom had scrambled across his line to deny the stooping Yongwa from Stacey’s stood up cross.

That was the trigger for the first wave of boos from home fans clearly frustrated by the Rams’ woeful start to the Championship season.

Andre Brooks looked to cash in on that mood of unrest swirling around Pride Park in the 15th minute when he turned inside, and had the freedom of the Derby half, to release Musaba, but Zetterstrom kicked the shot away.

Norwich continued to enjoy ample time and space on the ball in the opening quarter, and one Wright switch of play invited Musaba to drive at Isaac Gordon, but Brooks was not on the same wavelength when he shovelled the ball infield.

Kvistgaarden and Maghoma led another breakout that ended with a desperate Derby clearance, before Wright’s outswinging corner was met by a diving Kvistgaarden header that flew wide of the near post.

Clement’s side were almost toying with the ailing hosts by this stage. The over-worked Zetterstrom thwarted Kvistgaarden with an improvised back heel from close range, before Maghoma curled over from 25 yards.

But Norwich doubled their advantage in the 27th minute with Maghoma’s classy low finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards past the sprawling Zetterstrom, from Stacey’s set.

That sparked a loud chorus of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’, from the disgruntled Derby fans towards Eustace.

Derby’s night could have deteriorated ever further just three minutes later when Maghoma returned the favour for Stacey, with another darting burst and release, but the full-back’s low angled shot clipped the inside of the post before Derby kicked the rebound off the line.

Any hint of a stirring home finish to the opening half failed to materialise with more patient Norwich passing that ended with Musaba clipping a ball towards Brooks who squirted a first time flick over the top from close range.

But the former Sheffield United man superbly tricked his way past Gordon tight to the byline a minute from the end of the first 45, before a cut back Yongwa lashed into the right-hand corner.

That was the cue for swathes of home fans to leave their seats.

Eustace made a triple change at the interval but it was the Canaries who continued to look far more dangerous. Yongwa released Musaba in the 52nd minute to lead the breakout before the ball was squared for Wright, who veered around two but his shot was blocked.

Daniel Grimshaw was pressed into service for the first time on the night in the 54th minute when he took off to his right to claw out Morris’ free header, from a Derby corner.

McConville then needed to make a timely block to foil Bobby Clark after Brooks was dispossessed just outside his own penalty box.

Clement introduced Makama and Lucien Mahovo just past the hour mark, with Maghoma and Brooks making way, and Makama marked his introduction with a stunning long range strike for City’s fourth.

There was no other thought in the striker’s mind when he turned and unleashed an unstoppable shot from outside the area that had Clement punching the air as it cannoned off the underside of the bar.

Morris miscued a header at the near post in the 74th minute to ironic jeers from the travelling support.
