Arsenal gain massive Premier League title boost and Mikel Arteta knows how to widen the gap more

Arsenal have moved six points clear in the Premier League title race, and Mikel Arteta knows how to take his side to the next level.

Arsenal winning their clash with Hull City spared all of us from a week of reductive and endless debates over shirt pulls and VAR, and therefore they should surely be lauded beyond compare. That being said, this was the side’s eighth win by a single goal this season, which, from the first league game, accounts for 50% of the games played.

The Gunners used to be lauded under George Graham for winning in such ways; so much so that it sparked the infamous chant: '1-0 to the Arsenal'. But these results certainly do little to quell the ongoing narrative that the Gunners lack the entertaining thrill of champions.

But is that really their fault? It is hardly like they scored a single goal from one shot, and instead had 21 with 10 hitting the target.

Make sure you never miss the latest Arsenal news and opinion by making football.london one of your Google preferred sources .

"To be more efficient," Arteta said when asked how the one goal leads can become twos, threes and fours by football.london. "We are one against one against the keeper. That's happened twice today.

"There is a penalty there, there is another situation inside the box where the ball is bouncing. So many shots that have been deflected, blocked. We need to find ways to be more efficient, sometimes even more pragmatic.

"Sometimes my feeling is that we are trying to score a perfect goal against these low blocks. We need to be much more chaotic than that, and that's it. And open, I think, score much earlier because obviously that's going to change the course of the game."

That line about needing to score the perfect goal feels very Arsenal in its origin. The Gunners have been accused for well over a decade, stretching back to Arsene Wenger’s tenure, of too often wanting to walk the ball into the net.

Perhaps it is something simply too ingrained into the red and white seams of the side. Well, Arteta needs to find a way to break the stitches and evolve his team.

Finishing continues to be a problem, and again it was up to a midfielder to bail them out of trouble, with neither Kai Havertz nor Viktor Gyokeres scoring. The German has now been offside more this season, 15, than any other Arsenal player was in the entirety of last season.

Now this could be a Havertz issue, but Saka is third (7), and White (3) and Madueke (3) are in the top 30 players for this statistic. For me, that begs the question of whether the ball is actually being played soon enough, or if the team is too hesitant.

"It's a combination," Arteta said when quizzed on that topic. "It's all about timing. So there is a signal on the ball, and you need to time it around that. If that's a second too late or half a second too late, that's all fine."

But no doubt this is something that frustrates the Spaniard. He wants more from his side and ensuring the chances are created within the laws are clearly one.

"Yes, something to improve," Arteta said when quizzed on the offsides. "I said it, there are many areas that we need to improve.

"That's one; that's related sometimes to the timing or really the situation, or really the position, where he's lined up and what space he's given you. But certainly it's far too many. It's true that in the Villa game, obviously, he’s putting those stats in a different perspective. I think the sample is quite short to analyse it, but you have a point there."

Admittedly, from the discussion above you could be forgiven for thinking that Arsenal didn't win come away with all three points, so let’s talk about what was great, and Noni Madueke and Martin Odegaard deserve huge credit. The pair were more responsible than any other player for collecting the three points.

Naturally, it was they who combined, thanks to a parry from the Hull keeper, to leave the ball squirming out to Odegaard before he cleverly put it into the back of the net. This was his third league goal of the season, three times the volume he scored in all competitions during the last campaign.

The captain is consistently producing match-winning performances, which, in the absence of other regular stars like Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, is very welcome. What he could do when equipped with a world-class forward line around him is tantalising, and perhaps the club will address this shortcoming in the January transfer window.

Six points clear following Manchester City's defeat away at Nottingham Forest, the ground where Arsenal recently claimed three points of their own, the title race is looking very favourable for the Gunners. And you have to bear in mind that this comes after a tumultuous start to the season, with 10 away games from the opening 17 matches.

A trip to St. James' Park welcomes Arsenal following the international break, but after that Arsenal will not leave the capital until the middle of January, barring an FA Cup tie drawn away from home in the early new year anywhere other than London. All of a sudden, while Arsenal have been winning with narrow victories, the horizon is bright and filled with the promise of a potential back-to-back title victory.
