The sub-prefecture of Lorient has requested that the Professional Football League postpone the Ligue 1 fixture between FC Lorient and Stade Brestois scheduled for Saturday at 20:45 local time, according to RMC Sport, as nationwide social mobilization strains security forces across France.
France faces a third round of nationwide social mobilization and strikes, prompting authorities to reallocate internal security resources away from major athletic competitions. RMC Sport reported that the local derby in Lorient is classified as high-risk, requiring multiple mobile security units that authorities cannot simultaneously spare while policing widespread demonstrations across Brittany.
Similar scheduling pressures affect matches in Nice and Lyon, where recent weekend demonstrations have stretched local police departments. The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes is actively pushing to postpone the fixture between OGC Nice and Stade Rennais, which is currently programmed for Saturday at 17:15 local time.
The fixture complications extend beyond domestic play into European competition for Stade Rennais. According to reports from RMC Sport, Ouest-France, and regional outlet ici.fr, the club is in advanced discussions with UEFA to move its upcoming UEFA Europa League match against Greek side Olympiacos.
The continental fixture is initially scheduled for Thursday, November 5, at 18:45 local time. However, the prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine informed the club that insufficient police forces will be available to secure the stadium due to inter-union strike calls and demonstrations planned for that same day across France.
Discussions regarding the European tie involve moving the match to Wednesday or Tuesday depending on how domestic league fixtures resolve. Le Dauphiné Libéré noted that Rennes stands as the only French club scheduled to play a home match on that Thursday in the competition, while European matches for Olympique Lyonnais, Olympique de Marseille, and AS Monaco face different local security calculations.
The scheduling of the domestic league match between Nice and Rennes remains closely tied to the European rescheduling talks. Authorities are examining Friday and Sunday options for the Ligue 1 encounter, with Sunday appearing more probable to clear the calendar following Saturday’s planned social movements.
As discussions continue between the Professional Football League, UEFA, local prefectures, and the affected clubs, definitive kickoff times for the weekend fixtures remain subject to official reallocations.
