Favour Nkwocha was named Player of the Match after helping Nigeria’s Flamingos overcome Venezuela 1–0 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The midfielder delivered a composed and intelligent performance at the heart of Nigeria’s midfield as the Flamingos secured their place in the last four at the Mohammed VI Football Academy.
Aishat Oduntan settled a closely contested match with a penalty in the 89th minute. She converted the late opportunity calmly to break the deadlock and send Nigeria through to the semi-finals.
Nkwocha’s contribution was particularly notable given that she received a yellow card in the 24th minute. Despite the early caution, she remained influential throughout the game and helped Nigeria maintain control in midfield.
Nigeria created the greater number of opportunities, registering 19 shots compared with Venezuela’s six. However, the possession statistics were evenly split, with both teams holding 50% across the 90 minutes.
The Flamingos had to work patiently against a Venezuela side that made it difficult to find space in and around the penalty area. Nigeria continued to press for an opening before finally being rewarded when the late penalty presented them with the decisive chance.
The victory represents another significant step in Nigeria’s campaign as they pursue a first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
With the result, the Flamingos have advanced to the last four of the competition and remain in contention for a historic triumph.
