Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has expressed his astonishment at Yan Diomande’s stunning goal against Racing Santander, admitting he was unaware of the youngster’s ability to strike the ball with such power.
The 19-year-old Ivorian produced a spectacular effort as Jose Mourinho’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander in Sunday’s La Liga encounter.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Bellingham doubled Madrid’s advantage ten minutes later.
However, it was Diomande who stole the headlines in the 36th minute, unleashing a thunderous volley from the edge of the penalty area after Racing failed to clear a corner.
According to Sports Mole, the ball travelled at over 120 kilometres per hour, leaving the opposition goalkeeper with little chance.
Bellingham, who was particularly impressed by the finish, admitted that even he had been caught off guard by the youngster’s technique.
“It is incredible. I did not know he could hit the ball like that,” Bellingham told Real Madrid’s official television channel.
The England international also praised Diomande’s quality, pointing out that the winger had previously demonstrated his shooting ability against RB Leipzig.
“It is very good. Against Leipzig he had already done it. He is a special player, and we are very happy to have him in our squad.”
Diomande, who joined Real Madrid for a club-record £106 million (€125 million) during the summer transfer window, endured a difficult start to life at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, the former RB Leipzig winger has gradually established himself as an important member of Mourinho’s squad, contributing four goals and three assists in his last six appearances.
His impressive run has coincided with Madrid’s resurgence, with Sunday’s victory extending their winning streak to six matches across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Diomande’s emergence could present Mourinho with a difficult selection decision concerning Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius has struggled to reproduce his best form this season, managing just one goal and two assists in 11 appearances.
The 26-year-old has also endured disciplinary problems, having been suspended for Madrid’s last three league matches following his dismissal against Villarreal.
He is expected to miss Saturday’s encounter against Valencia before returning to contention for a starting place.
In contrast, Diomande has impressed not only with his attacking contributions but also his willingness to help defensively.
The youngster’s work rate was particularly evident against Racing Santander, where he repeatedly pressed opposition defenders alongside Bellingham despite Madrid already holding a comfortable lead.
With Diomande continuing to deliver impressive performances, Vinicius faces a battle to reclaim his place in Mourinho’s starting line-up.
