Inside the suffocating formula of the Steelers defense

Throughout NFL history, the Pittsburgh Steelers have established a defensive benchmark defined by physical, suffocating play. On a recent episode of the “Night Cap” podcast, hosts Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson highlighted how Pittsburgh’s defense continues to enforce this signature identity, turning opposing run games completely non-existent.

Analyzing their performance after the Steelers held the New Orleans Saints to a staggering 18 total rushing yards on 17 carries, Sharpe and Johnson reflected on how difficult it remains to establish ground leverage against Pittsburgh.

When the team’s starting quarterback, in this case Tyler Shough, leads a team with just seven yards on the ground while primary running backs are limited to single digits, it forces offenses into a trap.

"Ocho, you played the Steelers," Johnson said to Sharpe, recalling their AFC North battles. "I played the Steelers. They don't let you run the football. You rush for 100 yards on the Steelers, you've actually done something."

Sharpe emphasized that Pittsburgh’s game plan centers on making opponents completely one-dimensional. By removing the threat of the run early, the Steelers force offenses into long-yardage situations, altering how callers manage down and distance.

"Steelers don't let you. They try to make you one-dimensional," Sharpe explained. "They make you one-dimensional. Now they can pin their ears back and come get you."

Johnson had just one word for the Steelers run defense in response: “stingy.”

When an offense becomes predictable, it routinely operates behind the sticks. As Sharpe noted, abandoning the ground game leads directly to relentless pass rushes and turnover-worthy plays in the red zone. Quarterbacks may accumulate passing yardage, but without a complementary ground attack, sustained scoring drives become increasingly difficult.

Ultimately, the breakdown reinforces that while offensive trends evolve across the league, Pittsburgh’s formula remains unchanged. Stop the run, dictate tempo, and force the opponent to throw against a pinned-back pass rush.
