The Jacksonville Jaguars have been reluctant to trade WR Brian Thomas Jr. over the last year. As SI's Albert Breer noted recently, even if the ball doesn't go his way, there is a lot of value that his field-stretching presence adds to the offense.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler pointed out that with the Jaguars in win-now mode, they are looking to add to their roster, not subtract.
That said, based on what The Athletic's Jonathan Jones is hearing, those around the NFL say it "seems certain" that Thomas will be dealt at the trade deadline.
“They’ll trade him,” one rival team executive told Jones. “But probably to a noncontender.”
Thomas' fit in Liam Coen's offense has never materialized and this season, his role has continued to shrink as a result.
In Week 6, Thomas played just 15 offensive snaps. This past Thursday against Baltimore, he played only 19 snaps. Thomas has also caught just 10 passes this season for 117 yards with two touchdowns. He now has three games with no receptions.
Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers lead the way at wideout, while Josh Cameron has earned more opportunities, and we could potentially see Travis Hunter's role on offense expand. Also not helping Thomas earn snaps is the Jaguars' use of heavy personnel packages.
With the Jaguars looking like a real contender, GM James Gladstone must decide if he'd rather have Thomas on the team in his current role or acquire future draft capital to boost the roster down the road.
