Eagles vs. Commanders: 7 takeaways from Philadelphia's first half

The Philadelphia Eagles looked headed toward their strongest first half in weeks after building a 10-0 lead against the Washington Commanders, but familiar offensive problems and defensive inconsistencies let Washington take a 13-10 advantage into halftime Sunday night at Northwest Stadium.

Philadelphia managed just 113 total yards, including 39 rushing yards, and converted only one of six third-down opportunities. Tanner McKee completed 8 of 14 passes for 81 yards, while Saquon Barkley scored the Eagles' only touchdown on a 5-yard Wildcat run. Washington answered with 185 total yards and 13 consecutive points, taking advantage of Philadelphia's inability to sustain drives.

Here are seven takeaways from an opening half that started promisingly but ended with the Eagles searching for answers again.

1. Eagles waste another opportunity after building an early lead

Philadelphia took control early, building a 10-0 advantage behind a 40-yard Jake Elliott field goal and a touchdown drive set up by a Washington turnover. Drew Mukuba forced a fumble from tight end Chig Okonkwo, and Zack Baun recovered it, giving the Eagles possession at the Commanders' 26-yard line.

Barkley finished the short drive with a 5-yard touchdown run from the Wildcat behind a formation featuring seven offensive linemen. It was exactly the kind of complementary football Philadelphia needed after weeks of struggling to generate momentum. However, the Eagles failed to score again before halftime, allowing Washington to erase the deficit.

2. Tanner McKee continues to struggle on third down

McKee completed 8 of 14 passes for 81 yards without a touchdown or interception, but Philadelphia's inability to extend possessions remained a significant problem. The Eagles converted just one of six third-down attempts and repeatedly faced unfavorable situations because of pressure, penalties, and ineffective early-down plays.

Washington recorded one sack and two quarterback hits, while Philadelphia's offensive line struggled to consistently protect McKee on obvious passing downs. The result was another frustrating half for an offense that entered the game leading the NFL in three-and-out rate at 43.2%, according to Jeff Kerr.

3. Saquon Barkley scores, but running game remains ineffective

Barkley provided Philadelphia's biggest offensive highlight with his first-quarter touchdown, but the Eagles struggled to establish a consistent ground attack. The veteran running back had eight carries for just 15 yards, averaging fewer than two yards per attempt, although he added a 24-yard reception.

Elijah Mitchell led Philadelphia with 20 rushing yards on five carries, while the Eagles finished the half averaging just 2.8 yards per rushing attempt. The inability to create manageable third downs placed additional pressure on McKee and an offensive line that has struggled with communication and execution.

4. Drew Mukuba makes impact despite early injury scare

Mukuba had an eventful opening half after appearing to injure himself while making an interception that Jonathan Greenard's offside penalty nullified. The second-year safety remained down briefly before walking off under his own power and receiving medical attention.

He later returned and delivered one of Philadelphia's biggest defensive plays, forcing the fumble that set up Barkley's touchdown. His ability to remain involved after the injury scare provided an important boost for a secondary already dealing with several lineup adjustments.

5. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. makes presence felt

With Jihaad Campbell inactive because of hamstring and quadriceps injuries, Trotter received an expanded role alongside Zack Baun and delivered a productive opening half. The second-year linebacker led Philadelphia with eight tackles, including five solo stops, while helping the Eagles manage Washington's rushing attack.

The Commanders still rushed for 89 yards on 16 attempts, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Trotter's individual production was encouraging, but Philadelphia must improve its collective tackling and gap discipline after Washington moved the football consistently in the second quarter.

6. Eagles fail to contain Washington's late-half momentum

Washington entered the second quarter trailing 10-3 but eventually took control behind an 11-play, 89-yard touchdown drive that consumed nearly six minutes. Jayden Daniels connected with Stefon Diggs for an 8-yard touchdown, tying the score before the Commanders added another field goal late in the half.

Daniels completed 11 of 21 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, although Philadelphia benefited from several missed opportunities when Washington receivers found separation. The Eagles did not record a sack and generated only two quarterback hits, allowing Daniels to operate without consistent pressure despite several missed throws.

7. Special teams and field position remain major concerns

Philadelphia's special teams provided little help in the first half, while Washington got strong returns from Luke McCaffrey. The Commanders generated a 44-yard kickoff return and a 27-yard punt return, creating favorable field position and placing additional pressure on the Eagles' defense.

Jake Elliott remained reliable, converting his only field goal attempt from 40 yards, while Braden Mann averaged 44.3 yards across four punts. However, Philadelphia repeatedly surrendered field position and failed to capitalize on opportunities to control possession. Washington entered halftime with a narrow edge in time of possession and a significant advantage in total yards.

Final analysis

The Eagles remain within three points, but the margin is misleading considering how little their offense accomplished after the opening quarter. Philadelphia must improve its early-down execution, protect McKee, and prevent Washington from controlling the line of scrimmage if it hopes to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat.
