Tottenham Hotspur finally got their season up and running with their first victory of the campaign on Monday night, beating Coventry City 3-1. James Maddison returned to the starting XI and scored, before Omar Marmoush bagged his first goal for the club and Ben Davies sealed the deal in stoppage time.
Roberto De Zerbi was happy with his team’s performance against Coventry City but isn’t resting on his laurels as a trip to Chelsea beckons. Chelsea have dominated the Lilywhites during the Premier League era. Spurs have won just once at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era and have lost 10 of the last 12 meetings.
Chelsea vs Tottenham is the standout fixture of the Premier League matchweek eight. The predictions for the game are in full swing. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher is backing Chelsea to continue their dominance over Spurs in this fixture. He has predicted a 2-0 win for the Blues.
Now, Alan Shearer has also dropped his prediction for the game. The Newcastle United great has echoed Carragher’s sentiments, expecting Chelsea to secure a home win.
“I was impressed with Caicedo. Chelsea are looking a more well-rounded team and I think Caicedo’s played a huge part in that, he’s made the difference,” Alan Shearer told Betfair (h/t Football 365).
“It was only the last two or three games that that’s happened. I think the reason for that is because of what Caicedo gives you in midfield. Him and Henderson have done really well. No surprise they’ve stiffened up a bit with those two in midfield.
“Spurs did all right. Great to see Maddison back and scoring a goal. Kulusevski came back in for the last few minutes, got a good reception. I still didn’t think they played great, despite getting a good result. So, I’m going to go Chelsea home win.”
De Zerbi wants Tottenham to use their woeful record at Stamford Bridge as motivation when they face Chelsea. The Italian has admitted that his club’s abysmal historical record at Chelsea serves as extra motivation rather than a burden. The 47-year-old insisted his squad possesses enough quality to secure a victory against Xabi Alonso’s side.
However, Tottenham’s bid for a first win at Stamford Bridge since 2018 is not helped by the absence of Destiny Udogie and potentially James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, who made his first appearance for the club on Monday after spending more than 18 months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
