Under-fire Man Utd manager Michael Carrick's half-time team talk to the players that saw a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against Roma last night has been revealed. Having trailed 2-0 at half-time United rallied in spectacular style to win in a famous Old Trafford night.
It looked to be the night that would end Carrick's tenure as United conceded twice in the opening 17 minutes. But a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Cunha brace saw United win for the first time in 10 games and potentially prove to be the turning point in Carrick and the club's future.
The dramatic win had left many wondering what exactly the former England international said to his players at half time, considering they were so poor in the first half.
And now Carrick himself has revealed it, after being asked just that during a post-match press conference . . . and he gave the lads a six-word "go home" warning.
The 45-year-old former West Ham, Swindon Town, Birmingham City and Spurs midfielder said: “Half-time I was, I was wanting them to be more positive if anything, and not getting too disappointed and frustrated. The easiest thing is, when you keep trying to do something, is feeling sorry for yourself and if something goes wrong, you know, you get disappointed and... that's not going to help anybody, you know, we might as well all go home if that's the case.
“We've got to keep looking for the next moment, the next solution . . . and I said, look, this place I – and I don't like keep talking to the lads about what this place can do in history and what's gone before them too much – but it's there.
“This place does magical, magical things. It's done it before and it'll do it, it'll do it over and over again at some point in the future because, talking about the supporters, there's just something in this place that when we do have these type of nights, we do it the hard way.
“But at the same time, I had a, I was quite calm because I just had a feeling that the boys were there and they were in a, in a place leaving the changing room that they felt something could happen.
“And I have to say, for Bruno to, to double-take that penalty and go again, that's nothing, that's not necessarily an easy place. So for him to have the mentality and finish that, he deserves a lot of credit for that.”
The win has seemingly bought Michael Carrick some extra time to his reign as Man Utd boss, although given the never-ending chaos at the club . . . he could still be out of a job very soon.
