Carson Hocevar overcame significant adversity to finish sixth in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Spire Motorsports driver started 26th and remained competitive despite involvement in the massive accident that sent Joey Logano upside down with five scheduled laps remaining.
Hocevar, who won the spring race at Talladega, was pushing Logano in the outside lane when contact destabilized the No. 22 Ford. The resulting accident collected 15 cars and sent Hocevar's Chevrolet spinning down the frontstretch.
With four flat tires preventing him from driving back to pit road, Hocevar required assistance from a tow truck. His team subsequently repaired the car and returned him to competition without losing a lap.
That recovery proved crucial. Hocevar took advantage of the overtime finish to salvage sixth place, completing all 189 laps despite the earlier damage. The result earned Hocevar 31 points and moved him up one position in the championship standings.
Hocevar now ranks 10th in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings with 2,243 points. However, he trails championship leader Kyle Larson by 198 points, mathematically eliminating him from title contention. He will now focus on securing the best possible final championship position over the remaining two races.
