Bronny James scored 22 points and handed out a game-high 7 assists Friday night as the Coachella Valley Lakers opened their first season with a 104-98 win over the Salt Lake City Stars.

The 22-year-old suited up for Coachella Valley after the Los Angeles Lakers assigned him to their G League affiliate a day earlier. His night there quickly had fans bringing up his impact in the NBA, where he has played all of 12 minutes this season.

Bronny James Fills the Stat Sheet in G League Return as Fans Weigh His Level

James started at Acrisure Arena alongside rookie Cameron Carr, whom the Lakers had also assigned to Coachella Valley.

James finished second in scoring behind teammate Cole Swider’s 23 points and added 5 rebounds as Coachella Valley pulled away from a 91-91 tie in the final three minutes.

After the game, James explained how the Stars’ defense opened up his assists. “They were stepping up a little more than what they were supposed to, so I was trying to find my teammates.”

Earlier, Lakers head coach JJ Redick laid out why both guards were sent down: “The messaging was very simple. It’s just: you guys need reps, and you guys need to play.”

Fans took the night as a sign of where James’ game fits best, and one observer needed only a few words: “Bronny be moving different in the G-League.”

Another fan, replying to that post, went a step further in judging where James fits: “He was made for this league tbh.”

More fans used the game to make a broader point.

“Perfect example of the difference between NBA and G League,” one of them wrote.

The other was blunt in their take: “He’s a pro, just not an NBA pro.”

One more fan skipped the debate over levels and pointed to his situation in Los Angeles. “Lakers honestly should just trade Bronny to another team,” they wrote. “The lights in LA are too bright.”

James played seven minutes in the October 21 opener, a 127-105 win over the Golden State Warriors, and scored on his only shot. He then sat out the next four games. Across his five appearances, he has 4 points on 2-of-3 shooting and has yet to record an assist.

Friday’s 22 points topped what he has averaged at the G League level. The 2024 second-round pick, now in his third NBA season, also made clear what the extra minutes meant to him.

“I love playing a game of basketball, and you know, to be able to come down here and actually produce is good for me and good for my spirit,” James said. “And whenever I’m called down here, I’m all open to coming down here. It’s good to be in a new environment.”

While the debate over the skill gap and suitability for the G League continues, James and Carr have since been recalled and will rejoin the Lakers for a road trip that opens Sunday against the Detroit Pistons.
