Dustin Poirier has reflected on comments from fans and other fighters calling Movsar Evloev a ‘quitter’ for his UFC 333 loss.

This past Saturday in the premier MMA promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi at UFC 333, Alexander Volkanovski knocked out Movsar Evloev in the second round of the main event to retain his featherweight title.

Evloev was praised by Islam Makhachev for his immediate reaction to receiving the first loss of his career, as he took to social media to congratulate ‘The Great’ Volkanovski.

Despite that, the 32-year-old’s performance has raised question marks in the MMA world, and his teammate Dustin Poirier has reflected on comments calling him a ‘quitter’.

Poirier questions whether Evloev wanted out of the fight because of being hurt

UFC lightweight contender Paddy Pimblett accused Evloev of quitting during the fight, saying the Russian contender ‘just rolled over’ and didn’t even attempt to stay in the fight. And now, that sentiment has been somewhat echoed by his teammate, Poirier, who has questioned Evloev’s desire at the end of the round.

‘The Diamond’ has been one of Evloev’s teammates at American Top Team for several years now, and he has helped him climb the ranks in the UFC featherweight division. Despite that, Poirier has provided an honest reaction to his loss, questioning whether he wanted out of the fight due to being hurt.

“I think everybody was surprised and I think it comes down to what a lot of fans are saying like, how bad was he hurt? Did he want out of the fight? This is a teammate and a guy who I know who’s dedicated and committed to this and wouldn’t quit on himself so I wonder how hurt was he when he was on the ground covered up?” Poirier said on Deep Waters.

“In his right mind I just don’t think he would’ve sat there, he would’ve been in panic mode trying to keep the fight going trying to stay alive and show the ref he was there, he had to be hurt, I don’t think he’s a quitter like that.

“For me as a friend and a teammate of this guy and seeing him work hard, if he was in the right state of mind and knew where he was at, he quit on himself. If he was hurt and was disorientated and didn’t know what position he was in or something, then he just got beat, he only knows that,” Poirier continued.
