Devon National winner Dawson City to visit Greendale Farm Shop

Dawson City, who won the Devon National at Exeter Racecourse in 2018 and 2019, will be making a special appearance at Greendale Farm Shop near Exeter on Wednesday, October 28.

The popular retired chaser will be joined by representatives from Exeter Racecourse, with visitors also having the chance to enter a prize draw to win a family day at the races.

His former trainer, Polly Gundry, a former champion point-to-point rider, will join him for part of the day, while her daughter Daisy will stay alongside him throughout the visit.

Polly said: “He’ll absolutely love it. He loves people and going to a party. He’s a legend and since he retired he’s been to Pony Club camps, been team chasing and helped people learn to ride.

“He’s also a schoolmaster for our other horses, teaching them what to do. If his ears are pricked, we know he’s happy.”

The visit will give families an opportunity to meet the horse who enjoyed back-to-back Devon National victories and learn more about his life since retiring from racing.

Tom Lomas, of Greendale Farm Shop, said: “It’s not every day you get to meet a Devon National winner while doing your shopping, and having Polly here to share his story will make this a wonderful opportunity to learn about his life both on the racecourse and in retirement.

“With the Exeter Racecourse team joining us, a prize draw and on-the-spot prizes, we hope people will come along, spend some time with this lovely horse and discover more about the racing on our doorstep at Haldon Hill.”

The event also celebrates the partnership between Greendale Farm Shop and Exeter Racecourse, with the farm shop providing hampers presented to winning owners at the racecourse.

Jack Parkinson, general manager of Exeter Racecourse, said: “Greendale provides the hampers for our winning owners, so it’s lovely to bring one of our best-loved winners to the farm shop in return.

“Half-term is a great opportunity for families to come along, get close to a racehorse and hear his story. Dawson City gave us some fantastic days at Exeter, and he’s a wonderful example of how much horses can go on to enjoy once their racing careers are over.”

Greendale Farm Shop is on Sidmouth Road, Exeter, EX5 2JU.
