Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers dropped to 0-7 with a 24-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, extending their disappointing start to the 2026 season. The defeat also made them just the sixth team in the Super Bowl era to start a season 0-7 after reaching the playoffs the previous year.
The Chargers had a bye week to get things sorted out, but Sunday’s loss showed little had changed. At 0-7, they’re still the NFL’s only winless team, and fans are running out of patience with head coach Jim Harbaugh.
In the loss to the Rams, the Chargers failed to score a touchdown for the second game running. Their defense also struggled to contain the Rams’ offense, even with Davante Adams sidelined.
Harbaugh insisted after the loss that the team had not lost its determination. He said the players and coaches would keep pushing, use the upcoming week to improve and focus on fixing their mistakes rather than giving up on the season.
“Our motivation is dedication to getting it. To getting it changed, to getting it fixed. I said I’m focused on this game. I will go watch this tape. And I believe in our guys. I believe in our players, our coaches, and, yeah, it’s us who are the ones that the challenge is with, and we’re the ones that, we’re the only ones that can fix it,” he told reporters.
However, Harbaugh’s optimism did little to ease the frustration among fans, with several calling for his firing following the team’s disastrous start.
“Fire the HC. Terrible leader. Not the Harbaugh we thought we were getting. He’s old and tired and totally disconnected from the players,” a fan wrote.
“The worst Chargers team in the history of the franchise. I want Jim Harbaugh fired before the end of the season,” another posted.
“Please fire Jim Harbaugh and everyone he brought with him,” a third fan wrote.
“Please, for the love of God, fire Jim Harbaugh. He has absolutely wrecked this football team,” one X user said.
The criticism has also grown because Harbaugh continues to stand by offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel despite the offense’s struggles. Los Angeles currently ranks dead last in the NFL with a PFN Offense Impact Score of 61.1.
Asked whether McDaniel would remain the team’s play-caller, Harbaugh confirmed that he would. This decision hasn’t gone down well with frustrated fans.
“Just fire Harbaugh then,” a fan wrote.
“Harbaugh needs to be fired for sticking with McDaniel. What he’s done with this QB is unforgivable,” another wrote.
Harbaugh has also continued to back Justin Herbert despite the quarterback’s recent struggles. Herbert completed 24 of 32 passes for 257 yards against the Rams but threw two interceptions, bringing his season total to a league-high 10.
Asked directly whether he had considered benching Herbert, Harbaugh dismissed the idea. He didn’t single out his quarterback, instead describing the team’s struggles as a collective failure that everyone needs to take responsibility for.
“First of all, it’s a team effort. We’re gonna look at the film. We’re gonna address our issues where we can get better, and that’s just: keep working,” Harbaugh said.
Harbaugh’s support for both Herbert and McDaniel is unlikely to quiet the criticism as long as the Chargers keep losing.
Los Angeles will get another chance to turn things around when it hosts the Houston Texans next Sunday.
