Avro suffer narrow defeat at Cleethorpes Town after own goal

Not long into the match, the Ro had a few chances to take the lead through Max Harrop and Adam Owen.

Initially, Max Harrop won the ball on the edge of the box before having a go just inches away from where he took it from the Cleethorpes defender.

Harrop’s shot was blocked but deflected out for Adam Owen, who took a touch and pulled the trigger, hoping for the ball to hit the bottom right corner.

Unfortunately for the Ro’s number two, the ball went out for a goal kick.

A few minutes after that double chance for the Ro, Jacob Holland-Wilkinson had his own opportunity to put Avro ahead.

A great ball over the top of the defence found the striker, who worked it into the box and attempted to square it to Harry Salt as he was about to enter the box.

Despite the good idea, it wasn’t executed well, as Holland-Wilkinson put too much power behind the pass and sent it out of play.

Around the 20th minute mark, Cleethorpes whipped the ball into the box looking for one of their awaiting players in the box, but it instead bounced off an Avro defender and almost into the net had it not been for Jon Vilar Robinson, who managed to tip the ball over the bar to keep the game level.

In the 34th minute, Cleethorpes had a chance to take the lead as the ball was played into the box from the left-hand side.

The ball was met by Hey, who dove for the ball and sent it flying towards the net, but it strayed wide of Jon Vilar Robinson’s net.

The start of the second half saw Cleethorpes take the lead through an own goal via Chiekh Thiam.

Cleethorpes managed to break through the Ro’s back line and cut into the box before attempting to send the ball across the box for their winger, but as the ball went across the box, Thiam accidentally tapped it into the net for 1-0.

It was a great response by the players after going down, as a quick play through a gap in the defence allowed Jacob Holland-Wilkinson the chance to slot the ball into the back of the net, but it was not to be due to a well-timed block by a Cleethorpes defender stopped the striker's shot.

Around the 70th minute mark, Adam Owen lobbed the ball over the back line to allow Captain Benito Lowe to get through on goal.

As the captain charged through looking for the right moment to shoot, a Cleethorpes defender managed to catch up to him and perfectly timed a slide tackle to get the ball away from Lowe.

With little to no time left on the clock, Avro would have their best chance yet to snatch a point away from Cleethorpes as Sam Davidson had a go from the edge of the box.

Davidson’s shot looked to be on target before one of Cleethorpes' defenders blocked the shot.

That block would secure all three points for the hosts, and the Ro now travel back to Limeside looking ahead to the local match against former title rivals from last season Bury FC.
