New England Patriots star quarterback Drake Maye has surged to No. 2 on the NFL’s passing yards list this season after his big performance against the Chicago Bears in Week 7.
He has experienced a great level of rejuvenation after getting off to a rocky start to the year.
Maye put up 321 passing yards in the Patriots’ 30-24 loss to the Bears, bringing him to 1,784 passing yards on the season. He currently trails only Los Angeles Rams quarterback and reigning AP MVP Matthew Stafford, who leads the league with 1,794 yards.
It is to be noted that Maye has gotten the ball rolling on the Week 7 slate of games on Thursday night, ahead of the field, but he might remain in the top seven league-wide in passing yards once the week concludes, as every other quarterback outside of that will need nearly 300 yards or more to usurp him.
Maye was struggling immensely with turnovers through the first three weeks of the year, as he threw six interceptions while completing 51 of 80 passes for 585 yards, a touchdown and a 58.6 passer rating. His early-season struggles raised concerns about his consistency as New England searched for offensive stability.
However, over the course of his last four games, Maye has completed 90-of-134 passes for a whopping 1,199 yards, which has seen him rise dramatically on the passing yards list. He has surpassed 300 yards twice in that span, including in the loss to Chicago.
With his efficiency improving and big-play production accelerating, Maye has momentum to potentially keep putting up huge performances in the passing yards department and quickly claim the league lead in the coming weeks. He also has a springboard to enter the NFL MVP conversation with another win or two, provided he maintains his current level of play in the road ahead.
