The New York Giants received devastating news on Friday as they learned that linebacker Tremaine Edmunds would be out for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury.
The news was first reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic. Edmunds 50 tackles led the Giants, and his two sacks were tied for most on the team.
Edmunds was one of New York biggest free agent signings this offseason the 28-year-old linebacker to a three year-$36 million contract this offseason. He was on pace to set a career-high in tackles and had already tied a career-high in sacks.
His absence will be a huge blow to the defense as he played in every snap and was a mentor to rookie Arvell Reese.
Losing Edmunds couldn’t have come at a worse time for New York as their run defense has struggled mightily over the last few games. Over the last three weeks, the Giants defense has allowed 500 yards on the ground, and they currently have the 29th-ranked run defense.
Over the past week, there has been speculation that New York should look into trading for a running back to improve their struggling rushing offense. But if their run defense gets rolled over by the Houston Texans on Sunday, they may pivot their trade talks into acquiring a player that can help their front seven.
In addition to losing Edmunds for the season, Big Blue will also be without starting corner Greg Newsome II on Sunday with a concussion. The Giants were already 10.5-point underdogs to the Texans before the news broke about Edmunds and Newsome. That line should increase even more since New York will be without two of their best defensive players.
