Patriots insider floats trading two promising young players on roster

So much has been made about the New England Patriots being buyers before the trade deadline. But is there a possibility that the team might become sellers instead?

No, that doesn't mean stripping away at the core identity of a roster capable of contending for a Super Bowl when healthy. However, it does mean potentially parting ways with certain pieces to acquire either draft compensation or another top-tier player.

The Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard revealed three Patriots players who he would consider trading for a star defensive lineman. Two of those players are second-year stars that the team is still waiting to see break out.

"Kyle Williams. I'm just about done with Kyle Williams, and I think the Patriots might be as well," Bedard said on The Greg Bedard Podcast. "...I would also listen on TreVeyon Henderson. I'm willing to give him until after the bye week, but if somebody is enticed by TreVeyon Henderson, and maybe this is a chance to quote unquote sell high on TreVeyon Henderson because of some of the runs he put on film last year.

"Maybe some people are like, 'Oh, he's just a little bit injured right now, but he'll be better.' With each passing week, I'm becoming less and less convinced that TreVeyon Henderson, that the game is gonna slow down for him and his vision is gonna develop."

The third player that Bedard mentioned was veteran defensive tackle Christian Barmore.

As for Williams and Henderson, both were expected to contribute more than they have so far this season. Henderson has been the biggest disappointment after his impressive rookie year, when he racked up 911 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

There was a point where some even believed that he would overtake Rhamondre Stevenson as the Patriots' No. 1 running back. However, he has struggled picking the right running lanes, fighting through contact and holding up in pass protection. Corey Kiner, who joined the Patriots as the No. 3 option at running back, has even started to eat into some of Henderson's snaps.

Williams is a burner on the outside, but he hasn't shown much versatility in his route tree. That is something he can obviously improve on, but there's also legitimate fear that his greatest contribution will be that of a one-trick pony at receiver.

With that said, it still feels like it is too early to be giving up on either player. But the tape doesn't lie, and the concerns surrounding their production this season so far are genuine.
