India and New Zealand meet in the first T20I of their five-match series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22. After winning the toss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer elected to field first, hoping to restrict the hosts before chasing the target. However, New Zealand’s batters capitalised on the batting-friendly conditions to post a challenging total of 225/4.

Amid the hosts’ impressive batting, Bhuvneshwar Kumar pulled off a sharp catch to help Arshdeep Singh break a crucial partnership and provide India with a timely breakthrough.

The dismissal came in the 13th over of New Zealand’s innings when Arshdeep returned to the attack and struck immediately. The left-arm pacer delivered a short ball that angled across Daryl Mitchell. The batter moved across the crease and attempted to pull it over midwicket but failed to make proper contact. The ball flew high into the air off the top edge, giving Bhuvneshwar an opportunity at short third man.

The experienced Indian pacer kept his eyes on the swirling ball, positioned himself underneath it and completed the catch safely. The wicket ended a 42-run partnership and brought Mitchell’s innings to a close. He scored 28 off 19 deliveries, including two fours and a six, before Arshdeep sent him back to the pavilion. The breakthrough gave India some relief after New Zealand’s batters had maintained an aggressive scoring rate.

Here’s the video:

Glenn Phillips power New Zealand to 225/4

New Zealand enjoyed an aggressive start after being asked to bat first. Finn Allen led the charge with 45 off 24 deliveries, smashing five boundaries and two sixes. Axar Patel then dismissed Allen shortly after the powerplay, but Glenn Phillips ensured that the hosts continued to score freely. The middle-order batter struck an explosive 82 off 40 deliveries, taking on the Indian bowlers and keeping the scoring rate high through the middle overs.

Tim Seifert also made a useful contribution, scoring 24 off 17 deliveries. Debutant Bevon Jacobs added further momentum towards the end of the innings with a quickfire 31 off 16 balls. His contribution helped New Zealand finish on 225/4 in 20 overs, and India now require 226 runs to win the opening match at Hagley Oval.
