Jesse Derry is considered one of Chelsea’s most exciting prospects, having made a big impression for the Under-21s before breaking into the first team last season. The 19-year-old made his Chelsea debut against Hull in the FA Cup before earning his first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest in May.
Derry has since taken the next step in his development away from Stamford Bridge, joining Portuguese club Sporting on loan this summer. However, the winger’s first few months in Lisbon have not gone to plan, raising questions over what could happen in the January transfer window.

Jesse Derry has made only seven appearances for Sporting during the 2026/27 season, including just one start against Maritimo in the Allianz Cup last week. Derry provided an assist in the 2-1 victory but was an unused substitute in Sporting’s last two matches.
The second game was particularly important for Derry, as he had the chance to play at Stamford Bridge. Sporting faced Shakhtar Donetsk, who are using Chelsea’s home ground for their Champions League fixtures, on Wednesday night and secured a 1-0 win.
| Competition | Appearances | Minutes | Goals | Assists |
| Portuguese League | 4 | 32 | 0 | 0 |
| Champions League | 2 | 28 | 0 | 0 |
| Allianz Cup | 1 | 73 | 0 | 1 |
| Total | 7 | 133 | 0 | 1 |
Derry was never expected to walk straight into Sporting’s starting XI, but his lack of minutes has become a growing concern. Joining an elite European club with several quality players competing for places in his preferred position may ultimately have been the wrong move for the Chelsea wonderkid.
The Athletic has reported that Chelsea have an option to recall Derry from Sporting when the January transfer window opens. However, the report added: “Derry’s only thoughts right now are to make his time at Sporting CP a success and to help the team.”
The 19-year-old’s desire to keep fighting for his place rather than give up shows great character and should be commended. That said, it might be better for Derry’s development to find him another loan at a club where he can play every week and grow in confidence.
