Eagles defense faces a major test against Jayden Daniels in Week 8

The Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to stop opposing offenses during their five-game losing streak, and Sunday's matchup against Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels presents another significant test for defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Philadelphia enters Week 8 ranked 26th in passing defense and 27th against the run, and its inability to consistently generate pressure and control the line of scrimmage has contributed to its 2-5 record.

Daniels presents a particularly difficult challenge because he can extend plays and turn defensive breakdowns into significant gains. The Washington quarterback has rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns this season, giving the Commanders another offensive weapon beyond their running backs.

Eagles must improve their pass rush

Philadelphia failed to record a sack or quarterback hit against Dak Prescott during Monday night's 38-21 loss to Dallas.

That performance exposed a significant weakness in the Eagles' defense, particularly when the Cowboys established their running game and forced Philadelphia to defend the entire field.

Daniels' mobility makes maintaining disciplined rushing lanes even more important.

Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis must generate interior pressure while preventing Daniels from escaping through open lanes. On the outside, Jonathan Greenard, Jalyx Hunt, Arnold Ebiketie and Nolan Smith must balance aggressive pass rushing with containment responsibilities.

Philadelphia cannot afford to rush past Daniels and give him opportunities to escape around the edge.

Run defense remains a significant concern

The Eagles allowed Dallas 204 rushing yards, including more than 150 from Javonte Williams.

Washington enters Week 8 ranked ninth in rushing offense, creating another challenging matchup for Philadelphia's front seven.

The Commanders can combine their traditional rushing attack with Daniels' ability to keep the football, forcing linebackers and defensive backs to account for multiple threats.

Zack Baun and the Eagles' remaining linebackers must maintain their assignments while preventing Washington from turning short gains into explosive runs.

Third downs could determine the outcome

Washington ranks last in the NFL in third-down conversion percentage, giving the Eagles a chance to capitalize on the Commanders' offensive inconsistency.

However, that statistical weakness means little if Philadelphia cannot force Washington into difficult down-and-distance situations.

Containing Daniels on first and second down would allow Fangio to use more aggressive pressure packages without exposing the defense to manageable quarterback runs.

Daniels practiced Wednesday and Thursday fully despite a left elbow injury. The Eagles have the defensive talent to challenge Washington, but their recent performances have created legitimate questions about consistency and execution. If Philadelphia hopes to end its five-game losing streak, preventing Daniels from extending plays and controlling the football will be among its top defensive priorities.
