Kyler Murray might not be the guy, Cam Skattebo injury worry key Week 9

The Minnesota Vikings sit atop the NFC North with a 6-1 record, but quarterback Kyler Murray faces mounting questions regarding his long-term job security.

The Vikings’ winning record masks a subpar offense that ranks 27th in the league, averaging just 20 points per game. Production relies heavily on a dominant defense allowing a league-low 13.3 points per game, rather than a potent passing attack.

Murray looks uncomfortable in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system, where the former Arizona Cardinals’ franchise quarterback has thrown for just 1,022 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions through six games while struggling with downfield consistency and timing.

Murray’s hold on the position is tenuous.

The Vikings’ front office limited its financial risk by signing him to a low-cost, one-year “prove-it” contract, leaving the franchise with no long-term obligation if his subpar play persists. Speculation is intensifying following a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions, especially with Murray currently managing hamstring soreness ahead of Week 9.

If his injury forces an absence, backup Carson Wentz could secure the starting job permanently.

The Vikings host the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

Cam Skattebo injury sparks Giants backfield shakeup

Cam Skattebo remains central to the New York Giants’ plans, but a lingering hamstring injury complicates his availability heading into a Week 9 road game against the reeling Philadelphia Eagles.

The former Arizona State running back was limited to side work with trainers after exacerbating the injury on Oct. 25 during an explosive overtime run against Houston. The Giants had a bye last week. John Harbaugh characterized Skattebo’s status as day-to-day.

Skattebo hadn't practiced as of Thursday morning, Nov. 5.

The backfield crunch is amplified by Tyrone Tracy Jr. landing on injured reserve with a hamstring strain. With Tracy sidelined for at least four games, veteran Devin Singletary projects to carry the bulk of the workload if Skattebo is limited. The Giants also signed Greg Desrosiers Jr. off the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad to the active roster.

Seahawks integrate Quenton Nelson after Colts selloff

The Seattle Seahawks are reshaping their offensive line after acquiring left guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts.

Seattle sent a third-round selection and a 2028 fifth-round pick to Indianapolis to secure the elite blocker, who made his Seahawks debut in a loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. Analysts expect Seattle to offset the draft-capital loss with future compensatory picks.

Nelson provides immediate protection for the reigning Super Bowl champs, who have ruled out quarterback Sam Darnold for their Week 9 game against the Cardinals. Drew Lock is expected to start.

Nelson should also help open running lanes for Jadarian Price, Zach Charbonnet, Emanuel Wilson and George Holani.

Rashee Rice solidifies role in Chiefs’ passing game

Rashee Rice returned to play last week against the Denver Broncos after missing two games with a strained right hamstring and a lingering knee injury.

The wide receiver immediately re-energized a stagnant offense, hauling in seven of his eight targets for 53 yards and a touchdown. His presence ended a glaring drought for Patrick Mahomes, who had failed to throw a touchdown pass during Rice’s two-week absence.

Kansas City fell to its division rival, 28–24, marking the team’s second consecutive loss. But Rice’s health and immediate production provided a critical silver lining as the Chiefs prepare for a Week 9 matchup against the New York Jets.

Purdy maintains MVP pace despite Niners injuries

Brock Purdy keeps his offense operating at an elite level despite a persistent wave of injuries to his supporting cast.

The Gilbert Perry grad protects the football, avoids sacks with precise pocket movement and delivers accurate throws under pressure. His ability to elevate the roster keeps him at the forefront of the NFL MVP conversation entering Week 9, along with Buffalo Bills superstar Josh Allen, despite dealing with an injury-depleted receiving corps.

Purdy led the 49ers to a 6–1 start before their Week 8 bye. Through his first seven games, he has completed 69.2% of his passes for 1,748 yards, racking up 15 passing touchdowns against just four interceptions. He also has a league-leading 79.3 QBR and an impressive 110.1 passer rating. The Niners host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
