The past couple weeks haven't exactly been a banner display for the Eagles on the injury front. And on Monday, head coach Nick Sirianni once again found himself answering for the decisions of his medical team.
Eagles running back Saquon Barkley had missed the past two weeks with a hamstring injury and was listed as questionable heading into Monday night's game against the Cowboys. But after just seven carries and two receptions, Barkley exited the game and didn't return.
Though Barkley left with an announced back injury, Sirianni was still asked if he felt the Eagles rushed the star running back to return.
He defended how the Eagles handled the injury to reporters after the game. Via Pro Football Talk:
“Obviously, you saw that he was on a pitch count out there today. There was constant communication to see how he was feeling, see where he was, and obviously, he came out early in the second half. Again, when you go into something like that, you make sure that the player’s health is first and foremost. Is he ready to go? Do they feel ready to go? Do the doctors and trainers feel like they’re ready to go? We felt like that was the case today, but obviously wanted to keep a close eye on him, and he’s tough as heck. He wanted to be out there for his teammates, probably had to slow him [down] as far as -- he’d be out there every play because of the person he is and the teammate he is and the player he is and the toughness that he has.
“So, we tried to be smart with him there, but it was good to have him back out there. He obviously had a nice game and was very productive when he touched the football.”
It did appear that Barkley tweaked the hamstring injury on his first carry of the game. The back injury was a result of him trying to play through it.
It remains to be seen if this latest injury will keep Barkley sidelined once again.
