The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL|12) witnessed a spectacular moment of athleticism as Melbourne Stars all-rounder Annabel Sutherland produced a brilliant catch to send Adelaide Strikers opener Laura Wolvaardt back to the pavilion. The dismissal came during an entertaining contest at the Karen Rolton Oval, where the Strikers registered a convincing 21-run victory over the Stars.
While Wolvaardt had plenty of reasons to celebrate after delivering a memorable performance in her 100th WBBL appearance, Sutherland ensured that her contribution with the bat came to an end with a moment of outstanding fielding.
The moment arrived when Wolvaardt was looking increasingly dangerous at the crease. Facing a full toss from Melbourne Stars pacer Kim Garth, the South African opener stepped down the track and attempted to punch the delivery towards mid-off. However, she failed to find the gap as Sutherland, positioned perfectly in the field, displayed remarkable reflexes to complete a spectacular catch. The Stars all-rounder moved quickly, got herself into the right position and plucked the ball out of the air.
It was an outstanding piece of fielding that brought an entertaining innings to an end and provided the Stars with a much-needed breakthrough. Interestingly, Sutherland had already missed an opportunity to dismiss Wolvaardt earlier in the innings after dropping her when she was batting on nine. The missed chance proved costly, with the Strikers captain making the most of her reprieve before Sutherland eventually got her revenge.

The contest was particularly special for Wolvaardt, who reached the landmark of 100 appearances in the Women’s Big Bash League. The experienced opener marked the occasion with an impressive display of stroke-making, playing a crucial role in putting Adelaide Strikers in a commanding position. Wolvaardt smashed 70 runs from just 50 deliveries, finding the boundary nine times. She looked comfortable throughout her stay and combined controlled batting with attacking intent to put pressure on the opposition.
Her innings provided the foundation for a substantial Strikers total, although her dismissal meant she narrowly missed out on converting her half-century into an even bigger score. Madeline Penna provided the finishing fireworks, smashing an unbeaten 36 off just 13 deliveries. Her explosive contribution helped Adelaide reach an imposing 185/2 in their allotted 20 overs.
Chasing 186 for victory, the Melbourne Stars needed a strong batting performance but struggled to maintain the required scoring rate against a disciplined Strikers bowling attack. Rhys McKenna emerged as their leading run-scorer, making 40 from 31 balls, while Sutherland contributed 29 runs. However, their efforts were insufficient to take the visitors across the finishing line.
Amanda-Jade Wellington proved particularly effective with the ball, claiming three wickets for 28 runs. Her timely breakthroughs restricted the Stars’ progress and played a significant role in keeping the chase under control. Eventually, Melbourne finished 21 runs short of the target, handing Adelaide Strikers a convincing victory at home.
