A State Department official declined to discuss her departure, describing it as an internal personnel matter
WASHINGTON, DC: Former ESPN reporter Britt McHenry reportedly resigned from her State Department position on Thursday, October 22, following a confrontation at a Washington Wizards versus Milwaukee Bucks game the previous night.
The exit came shortly after she was promoted to lead External Affairs and Press for under secretary Jacob Helberg’s team, according to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to Page Six.
McHenry had joined the department last month as a press adviser covering Europe and Africa. A source claimed she was promoted on Wednesday, October 21, the same day as the basketball game incident, but was forced to resign within 24 hours.

The incident unfolded at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, during the Wizards-Bucks game. According to a source cited by Page Six, a man in the crowd began heckling Bucks player Kyle Kuzma, who is engaged to model Winnie Harlow.
The source claimed the man made insulting comments about Harlow, including saying that Kuzma played badly because his girlfriend was “ugly.” McHenry reportedly asked the fan to “ease up,” but the source said the crowd then turned its attention toward her.
According to that account, fans threw a drink at McHenry. However, video obtained by TMZ appears to show her tossing a drink as spectators chanted, “Get her out!”
The footage reportedly shows items being thrown toward McHenry after she tossed the drink. She was then escorted out of the arena as spectators booed, with the video appearing to show her blowing kisses to the crowd as she left.
The accounts differ on the sequence of events, and the available report does not independently establish exactly how the confrontation began.
McHenry was hired as a State Department press adviser covering Europe and Africa. According to Page Six, she was promoted on Wednesday to lead External Affairs and Press for under secretary Jacob Helberg’s team.
The promotion reportedly came on the same day as the NBA game confrontation. A source familiar with the situation claimed that the incident led to her departure.
“She was forced to resign [over the incident],” the source said. “She was promoted and fired within 24 hours.”
A State Department spokesperson declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding her exit, saying, “We do not comment on internal personnel matters.”
The department did not provide further details about the resignation in the account supplied by Page Six.
This is not the first time McHenry has faced professional consequences after footage of her behavior attracted public attention. In 2015, ESPN suspended her for one week after a video showed her berating an employee at a towing company in Washington, DC.
The incident occurred after her car was towed. In the video, McHenry insulted the employee’s education and abilities while questioning the person’s job.
“You have no education” and “skill set,” she said during the confrontation, according to the report.
She also asked, “Do you feel good about your job? So I could be a college dropout and do the same thing? Why, ’cause I have a brain, and you don’t?”
McHenry continued with personal remarks, saying, “Maybe if I was missing some teeth, they would hire me, huh?” She then added, “’Cause I’m on television, and you’re in a f*****g trailer, honey.”
The footage went viral and led to her suspension from ESPN.
