Tottenham Hotspur Women captain Drew Spence has told her side to put recent league mistakes past them and focus on Arsenal on Saturday. After picking up ten points from four games in September, Spurs have lost their last two outings. Defeats against London City and Chelsea exposed defensive errors at key moments. Speaking in the matchday programme, Spence admitted recent displays fell short.
Looking back at the loss to London City, the midfielder pointed to a poor opening 45 minutes as the main issue. Spence said:
“We have tried to play a style, and I feel like we have come unstuck in both games.”
“We were not at our best performance against London City, and we cannot concede that many goals that early on, so the first half was nowhere near our standards,“ she added.
Spurs showed more fight after the international break when they visited Chelsea. Martin Ho side matched the Blues for an hour before conceding three times in eight minutes. Reflecting on that game,
Spence said: “I thought we were strong for 60 minutes against Chelsea, we competed a lot, we created chances, but it has not been good enough from us, and we know that we all need to be better.”
That late collapse in West London showed the captain where her team must improve against top rivals.
“The games unfortunately do not last an hour long, so I think that is where we need to grow as a team,” Spence explained.
She noted that top sides always punish lapses in concentration like Chelsea did. Keeping focus for the full ninety minutes will be vital against Arsenal on Saturday.
Even after two losses, Spence stressed that Spurs will stick to the style that earned ten points in September. She said:
“But we still want to play the way we want to, and we are not going to shy away from that.”
She concluded: “It is really important now that we fix a few things and we really focus on the minor details that can hopefully make us have a better result this weekend.”
