The Detroit Lions have released an injury update on their star linebacker Jack Campbell. The player was earlier carted off the field after he sustained a serious neck injury during a game against the Vikings on Sunday, November 1.

Releasing a statement, Lions have said that the linebacker was taken to a local hospital where he is resting. The statement further added that Campbell will remain in the hospital overnight. He will be under continuous evaluation and monitoring, the team added. They also said any further updates will be provided as they come. The update came almost three hours after the game, and the Lions are yet to provide a diagnosis on Campbell.

What happened during the game?

The star linebacker suffered a serious neck injury during the first play of the fourth quarter against the Vikings, NBC Sports reported. The injury occurred while Campbell was tackling Vikings tight end, TJ Hockenson, who has also played for the Lions.

A video of the incident showed Campbell lunging at Hockenson from the side as Lions defensive end Eric O’Neill tackled him from the other side. Amid the collision, Campbell suffered a blow to his neck.

The linebacker remained motionless for several minutes after the collision, facing the ground. He was surrounded by medical staff for about nine minutes, The Guardian reported. He was later strapped to a board and carted off the field. The player also did not signal to the crowd while he was being driven off towards the tunnel.

Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, said “He’s breathing, he’s alert when he left”.

Players from both teams were visibly shaken up

While the player was being treated on the field, his entire team gathered around him with players from both teams looking visibly shaken up. Lions Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson appeared to be crying as Campbell was driven off the field.

Following their victory, Dan Campbell offered the team’s support for Campbell and his family. Lions quarterback, Jared Goff also gave an emotional message to the press. He reminded everyone that Campbell is both a husband and a father.

Hockenson, the player Campbell was tackling, also talked about the incident post match. He said, "Honestly this has been weighing heavily on my heart. He (Campbell) was trying to tackle during that play…Everything happened so quickly, and I never imagined that the play would end with him suffering such a frightening injury.” Several other players also showed their supprt for Campbell.
