Dyer plans appeal as Southend sign Patrick & Simpson

Southend United boss Kieron Dyer says he will appeal against the red card he was shown following their 2-2 draw against FC Halifax Town on Saturday.

The former Newcastle United and England midfielder was sent off after the final whistle after Halifax's Tayt-Lemar Trusty scored a 90th-minute equaliser at Roots Hall.

The point left Southend third in the National League after 14 matches, but they are now 10 points below current leaders Boreham Wood.

Dyer's side play Worthing on Tuesday, having completed the double loan signing of strikers Omari Patrick from Forest Green Rovers and Tyreece Simpson from Port Vale.

He was unhappy with a number of incidents during the Halifax game, including a moment in the 88th minute in which Promise Omochere was adjudged to have taken too long to leave the field of play after being substituted.

Under new rules brought in at the beginning of the season, the home side were forced to play with 10 men just before Halifax grabbed their leveller.

"I get sent off for 'threatening and aggressive behaviour towards the referee,'" Dyer told BBC Essex.

"Me and Mike Jones [the referee assessor] listened to the audio today. I will appeal the red card and I will not have a red card.

"I'm obviously frustrated and I walk up to the referee after the game. On the audio, the referee says 'Kieron, back away from me'. As soon as [Southend defender] Kyle McAdam hears that, he pulls me behind the referee.

"All I say to the referee is, 'why didn't you warn Promise?' He says, 'Kieron this is not the time.'

"I said 'All I'm asking is, why didn't you warn Promise? Can't you answer a question? I'm not verbally abusing you.' He sends me off.

"When he sends me off, then I swear at him, and walk off. I feel when we appeal I will not serve a touchline ban.

"We'll get the review on Wednesday and we will appeal it. I don't think they've got a leg to stand on to be honest, and I'll be really disappointed if I didn't win an appeal."

Former Tranmere Rovers striker Patrick, who will stay at Roots Hall for the rest of the season, went straight into the Dyer's starting line-up against Worthing.

The 30-year-old scored 18 goals in League Two across two seasons at Prenton Park before a move this summer at Forest Green where he has failed to make a real impact.

Meanwhile, Saint Kitts and Nevis international Simpson appeared off the bench four times for Vale in League Two so far this season without scoring and he will be with Southend until 10 January.

The 24-year-old started his career at Ipswich Town and has also played for Swindon, Huddersfield, Northampton, Stevenage and Colchester United.
