With the game at 2-2, Tete were looking to break away and score a winner. Jesus Owono had rushed out of his area to clear a long ball and collided with the striker. He was sent off immediately.

The striker received treatment on the pitch before being taken away by ambulance, with the match abandoned in injury time.

Tenerife initially reported that he was stable despite the severity of his condition. A further update in the early hours of Tuesday said his condition had deteriorated, before the club announced his death at 8 am.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”
