You don't want to make too much of the New Orleans Saints shaking up their practice squad, and it might be a reach to connect these roster moves to the plan for Jordyn Tyson, but it's all we've got to work with. On Tuesday, the Saints announced that they had released wide receiver Kyrese Rowan from the practice squad and re-signed rookie offensive lineman Alan Herron.
So what does it have to do with Tyson? The Saints had a receiving corps of four on the 53-man roster (Chris Olave, Devaughn Vele, Bryce Lance, and Barion Brown) with four more on the practice squad before releasing Rowan. Now it's just three between Kevin Austin Jr., Cedric Tillman, and Jalen Cropper. Austin and Tillman have each maxed out their three-game limit for elevations to the active roster so the Saints would have to sign one of them to the 53-man roster to keep playing. Or look to someone else. Tyson has been eligible to come off of injured reserve since Oct. 6, and the Oct. 25 game in Paris has always been seen as the over/under point for when he could be activated. Maybe he's on his way back after the bye week and the Saints are preparing for it by whittling down the receiving corps. Maybe we're just reaching.
As for Herron? He signed with New Orleans as a rookie free agent out of Maryland back in April, receiving the second-most guarantees in his contract behind his fellow offensive lineman Alex Wollschlaeger. He's primarily worked at left tackle, his college position, throughout training camp and the preseason and initially signed with the practice squad in August. The Saints waived him on Oct. 16 to open a spot when cornerback Jayden Price was bumped down from the 53-man roster, but he's returned a week and a half later. He missed the trip to Paris, which has to be a bummer for the first-year pro, but at least he's back in the mix.
