It was a 3-2 defeat at Maidenhead in the National League on October 26 2021 - and Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson remembers it well as he reflected on just how far the club has come in that time.
Five years on from knocking around in non-league football, Parkinson said: “This week alone, it’s Sheffield United, Middlesbrough and Wolves.
“What a week for everyone connected with the club to look forward to.”
Under the Hollywood ownership, Parkinson has led Wrexham to back-to-back-to-back promotions as they try to fulfil Mac and Reynolds’ dream of making it all the way to the Premier League.
“Five years ago when Rob and Ryan came to Maidenhead, it was an eventful game, to say the least and a great introduction for them into the world of the National League.
“Obviously then they came up at the weekend and it was a fantastic occasion for them to see the Racecourse.”
Mac and Reynolds have also been talking about their Maidenhead memories on the club’s website.
Mac said: “It was a humbling experience. We went into it with high expectations and thought that we had a chance to win. Except for the result, everything else was simply magic.
“I remember exactly what happened, though! There was a red card, and the wrong player got taken off who didn’t commit the foul. We played a man down, and we lost.”
Reynolds commented “That was a fun day. I think back to Maidenhead, and I remember that with time marching forward, you look back and see it more clearly.
“I think that I had a bit of an existential crisis at that match because I thought ‘What are we doing here?’.
“It felt so far-fetched, the promise and the hope to someday be in League One or League, Two and it was just such a pipe dream.”
