Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a potential move for free agent Mauro Icardi as the club considers attacking reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window. According to a report from TyC Sports, Spurs are actively monitoring the experienced striker as part of plans to address their central attacking options under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
This comes at a time when Tottenham find themselves reeling in the bottom half of the table. The North Londoners have struggled to find consistent goalscoring output. With the summer sale of Will Lankshear to Middlesbrough and the ongoing squad exile of Richarlison, central striking duties have fallen heavily upon Dominic Solanke, with Mathys Tel and Omar Marmoush frequently deployed in wide or supporting roles.
Mauro Icardi has enjoyed an illustrious career, defined by a decade and a half of clinical, hyper-efficient goalscoring across Europe’s top leagues. Despite frequent off-field distractions and media scrutiny, the 33-year-old has consistently proven to be one of the most reliable out-and-out No.9s of his generation. He has 250 club goals at senior level to his name, with the massive bulk of those coming for Inter Milan and Galatasaray.
Icardi has remained without a club since leaving Galatasaray over the summer. The report adds that Tottenham are one of seven clubs weighing up giving a chance to the Argentine striker. PAOK Thessaloniki, Elche, Everton, Real Betis, Besiktas, and Benfica are in the mix as well.
It is worth noting that De Zerbi has already submitted Tottenham’s 25-man Premier League squad, which means even if the club snaps up free agent Icardi, they’d not be able to register him before January 1, 2027. He will have to spend the next two months on the periphery as well, while the former Argentina international’s lack of fitness and game rhythm would make him a risky acquisition. Plus, the 33-year-old’s substantial monetary demands might disturb the wage structure in place at the club.
There is no doubting Icardi’s ability to put the ball in the back of the net, experience and winning mentality, but when the requirement is of young and dynamic blood to further rebuild the squad, the South American at 33 doesn’t fit the bill at Tottenham. So, the North Londoners would do well to stay away from the player.
