First-year general manager Nolan Teasley has been actively working the phone lines, trying to find creative ways to upgrade a Minnesota Vikings roster that enters Week 8 as the NFL’s lone remaining undefeated team. There are paths to upgrade the offense, such as reinforcing the trenches or adding a star home-run-hitting running back. Upgrades are available on defense too, where Brian Flores’ unit could use yet another pass-rusher along the front seven or possibly even add a safety who could be a better long-term fit in Minnesota.
Apparently, Teasley recently agreed to a trade with another team, but the player did not want to leave the Vikings, or perhaps he just didn’t want to play for the other team. So, who was it?
One of the most popular trade candidates lurking among the Vikings is wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who signed a one-year contract worth $8 million this offseason. The blocking specialist was expected to still have a fairly significant role in the passing offense, but he’s been limited to just four receptions for 43 yards thus far. That puts him on pace for new career lows in a year where he should be maximizing his value in anticipation of hitting the open market again next offseason.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers have been mentioned as a popular destination for the 29-year-old receiver. Not just because they’re on track to return to the playoffs, but because he played there for the first five years of his career, and they have a need with multiple receivers going down with injury.
According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Vikings and 49ers recently struck a trade agreement that would send Jennings back to San Francisco, but the player didn’t want to go back to his former team.
Was this a case where Jennings is starting to warm up to Kevin O’Connell’s offense, which is led by Murray, especially considering the Vikings are 6-0? Or is there something about the idea of going back to playing for Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers that Jennings just wants no part of? It’s tough to say.
Still, it’s clear that the Vikings were open to dealing Jennings for the right price. The question now becomes whether they’ll continue finding trade partners for Jennings, or whether he’s there to stay in Minnesota, the team he agreed to join in free agency.
