Troy Parrott set for extended run as Real Betis boss hails ‘important goals’ scored by Ireland star

A third Champions League appearance will see Troy Parrott appear on Wednesday against Feyenoord, a team he is familiar with.

Troy Parrott is set for an extended run in the Real Betis starting-11.

An injury to Colombia striker Cucho Hernandez means Parrott is likely to see more game-time than he has done up to this point.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini has made no secret of his desire to rotate his two main front-men, including his €20 million arrival from AZ Alkmaar last season.

However, Hernandez’s injury, which is likely to see him sidelined for at least a month, leaves him short in the striker department.

Parrott was always expected to start Wednesday’s Champions League game against Feyenoord, as Hernandez was selected for last weekend’s clash with Barcelona.

A muscle injury meant he had to be replaced by Parrott just after the hour - and further investigation has led to suggestions that he faces several weeks on the treatment table.

Pellegrini didn’t seem too concerned when he was asked about Hernandez ahead of Wednesday's game against Feyenoord.

“Without a doubt Parrott is definitely better [as an option] than Cucho who’s injured,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone can complain about either Parrott or Cucho. They’ve both scored important goals and they’re both important to us.”

Ireland star Parrott will be no stranger to the Feyenoord defence. He played against them five times during his time in the Eredivisie.

While on-loan from Tottenham to Excelsior during the 2023/24 campaign he scored once in two appearances - in a 4-2 defeat in November 2023.

And while at AZ he played three times against Feyenoord and scored twice, the most recent goal coming in last May’s 1-1 draw.

Pellegrini added: “I expect a very difficult match, like all Champions League matches.

“We’ve been drawn against top teams in their respective leagues. It’s very tough, but I think we have the tools to beat them at home.”
