Ospreys v Cardiff player ratings as youngster puts in electric performance

Cardiff kept the Ospreys scoreless in their Welsh derby at St Helen's on Saturday night

Cardiff took bragging rights at St Helen's on Saturday night, keeping the Ospreys off the scoreboard in a 26-0 win in Swansea.

Here's how the players rated...

Iestyn Hopkins 5 v Matty Young 7

Frustrating night for the Ospreys full-back, with some basic errors - although he did show more in second half as Ospreys dominated possession and territory. As for Young, it was another strong outing - beating more defenders and making more metres than anyone.

Luke Morgan 5 v Tom Bowen 8

A willing carrier, but little impact by one-cap Wales wing Morgan. Can't say the same for the man opposite him. Give Bowen an inch and he'll skin you. An electric two-try outing.

Owen Watkin 5 v Le Roux Malan 7

Solid enough on both sides of the ball by Watkin, but didn't really do a great deal to improve the Ospreys' blunt attack. As for Malan, he was a nice foil to Emanuel, being busy throughout.

Keiran Williams 5 v Steff Emanuel 9

Williams carries often and with purpose, but the Ospreys looked one-dimensional. Emanuel was superb, though. A brilliant performance by the young centre, playing his part in the first three tries and denying the Ospreys a consolation at the end. A triple-threat player.

Keelan Giles 6 v Josh Adams 7

If anyone looked like scoring for the Ospreys, it was Giles. Unfortunately, he was held up at the death. As for Adams, he got himself on the scoresheet. Might have had another in the second half if not for an awkward bounce.

Harri Wilde 5 v Jarrod Evans 7

Thrown in to start against his parent club at the last minute, Wilde tried his hardest in an Ospreys side that were getting exposed at the breakdown. Evans, meanwhile, looked assured - other than one miss-hit crossfield kick in the Ospreys' 22.

Luke Davies 5 v Johan Mulder 8

The Cardiff scrum-half comprehensively got the better of this battle, kicking well, holding up Steffan Thomas over the line and just being a menace. Davies, meanwhile, struggled to inject a great deal of tempo into the Ospreys' attack.

Steffan Thomas 5 v Keiron Assiratti 6

The Ospreys loosehead coughed up a few penalties, while he was held up over the line in the first-half. Assiratti also got on the wrong side of the officials as Cardiff's scrum struggled at times.

Sam Parry 6 v Dafydd Hughes 7

Parry got through his usual mountain of work, although Cardiff did manage to disrupt a fair few at source. Held up over the line in the second half. As for Hughes, he picked up a couple of turnovers in a lively performance.

Tom Botha 5 v Danny Southworth 7

Southworth was strong around the loose, playing his part in disrupting the Ospreys' ruck ball in the first half. However, he didn't last long into the second half - with the home side's scrum on top. Botha was strong at the scrum, but did little else.

James Ratti 6 v Josh McNally 8

High industry from Ratti, but offset by a handful of penalties - while Cardiff managed to disrupt the maul. McNally was a big part of that, with the usual physical work from the lock.

Ryan Smith 6 v Rory Thornton 8

Smith had his moments, earning a couple of breakdown turnovers. But Thornton won his particular battle, with the second-row managing to sack the Ospreys' maul on a number of occasions, nullifying the home side's biggest weapon.

Great work to swim through the Ospreys' maul and hold it up.

Liam Wright 5 v Semisi Paea 7

There were the odd moments from Wright, but he'll be disappointed at how Cardiff got at the Ospreys' lineout. As for Paea, he worked relentlessly.

Ross Moriarty 5 v Dan Thomas 8

Moriarty's first start at St Helen's was ended prematurely, following a nasty head clash with Paea. His opposite number was a big part of Cardiff's dominance at the breakdown, being a pest throughout.

Morgan Morris 7 v Alun Lawrence 8

A superb carrier throughout, Morris fought tirelessly against the tide - although his frustration with the referee became apparent late on. As for Lawrence, his first game of the season was a monstrous one - making 23 tackles by the end.

Replacements

Efan Daniel 5 v Tom Howe 7

Replacement hooker Daniel ultimately made little impact in his cameo, although he was denied a textbook jackal after a team-mate failed to roll away. Not the case for Howe, with the highly-rated youngster shining off the bench. Big breakdown penalty within moments of coming on, before steering the maul to the line for the bonus-point try.

Cameron Jones 5 v Scott Sio 7

The Ospreys' scrum had its moments, even after changing the props. But Sio got through some impressive work off the bench - with a breakdown turnover the eye-catching moment.

Ben Warren 5 v Javan Sebastian 5

Warren was pinged for for not rolling away, which led to Cardiff's bonus-point score. As for Sebastian, it was a mixed bag at the scrum.

Huw Sutton 5 v Tom Manz 6

Little time for Sutton to make an impact towards the end. Leicester loanee Manz did add some energy to the Cardiff pack, though.

Morgan Morse 6 v Lucas de la Rua 7

Both on after a clash of heads between Paea and Moriarty. Morse carried well when given the chance, while de la Rua showed his breakdown nous - with one steal minutes after coming on just superb.

Harri Williams 6 v Aled Davies 5

Williams was lively off the bench, with three linebreaks in his short cameo. Davies, meanwhile, was on long after the result was sealed.

Steff Jac Jones N/A v Callum Sheedy 6

Jac Jones was only on for a few minutes, so it's too little to judge - but he threw himself into a frantic end. Sheedy had longer, with some smart kicking keeping Cardiff on top.

Evardi Boshoff 6 v Osian Darwin-Lewis 6

Boshoff injected some attacking impetus into matters, although it was too little, too late. Wales U20s centre Darwin-Lewis looked handy in his cameo on the wing, nearly crossing out wide.
