Media outlets in Spain have delivered their verdict on Anthony Gordon’s performance as Barcelona were beaten by Real Madrid.

On Sunday night, the first Clasico of the 2026/2027 La Liga campaign took place at the Spotify Camp Nou, with leaders Barcelona hosting fierce rivals Madrid.

During what was a tightly contested affair in Catalunya, Jose Mourinho’s men came away with a 2-1 victory, with Kylian Mbappe netting both goals for the visitors. Raphinha was on the scoresheet for Barcelona.

As a result, Barcelona now sit top of the La Liga table with just a two-point advantage over Atletico Madrid, with Los Blancos a point further behind.

Barcelona’s summer signing Gordon started on the left wing, in an attack that also contained Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez. However, the Englishman endured a tough El Clasico debut as he ended up on the losing side and failed to provide a goal or an assist.

Before being taken off in the 86th minute for Karim Adeyemi, Gordon managed three shots on target and also recorded a pass success rate of 97.2 per cent, completing 35 out of 36 passes.

Gordon did lose possession on five occasions, committed two fouls and was booked by referee Juan Martínez Munuera in the 84th minute.

Reacting to Gordon’s performance, Spanish news outlet SPORT gave the 25-year-old a match rating of six out of 10, claiming that Gordon lacked the ‘necessary quickness in his finishing’.

SPORT said: “He performed an unspectacular but important role, assisting (Joao) Cancelo defensively to curb the opposition’s attacking forays down that flank.

“In the second half, he had a few chances to score and make it 2-1, but he lacked the necessary quickness in his finishing.”

Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo felt that Gordon was the ‘most consistent’ player on the pitch. The publication wrote: “He played with his customary dynamism and spared no effort in the press.

“He challenged his direct opponent in every encounter and helped the team gain ground whenever he carried the ball. He was the most consistent player throughout the match.”

Lastly, Barca Universal gave Gordon a rating of 5.5, which was below the likes of Raphinha, Yamal and Lopez. They felt the Englishman should have ‘done more’ to test Thibaut Courtois.

Barca Universal stated: “Gordon tried a lot of different things in the first half, some of which came off and some of which did not.

“An industrious performance from the Englishman, but yet another game in which he could have and should have done more to test Madrid’s goalkeeper. Got an undeserved yellow card late on before being taken off.”

Looking ahead, Gordon and Barcelona will be back in La Liga action next weekend, when they take on Deportivo Alaves on Saturday night at the Spotify Camp Nou.
