Liverpool took a pair of leads in Turkiye but made mistakes in their box late in a 3-2 loss to Fenerbache on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League.
The Reds led for all of nine minutes in the game, as Trey Nyoni’s 24th-minute goal was canceled out by a deflected 29th-minute free kick from ex-Man United man Mason Greenwood and Alexander Isak’s 69th-minute close range header was undone in the 73rd minute by Archie Brown feasting on Cody Gakpo’s errant header.
Brown, the former England U20 man and Derby County academy product, then chipped a cross that Alexis Mac Allister, Jeremy Jacquet, and Nyoni couldn’t stop Vedat Muriqi from heading back Alisson Becker.
Liverpool had 68% possession and out-attempted Fener 22-17 but lost the xG battle 1.70-1.57. Ronald Araujo was rested while Isak, Gakpo, and Florian Wirtz were among the players who came off the bench in the loss.
It’s the Reds’ first loss in this season’s Champions League, while Fener collect their first win and move all the way up to 19th with five points.
