For the second straight game, the New Orleans Pelicans took a lead into the fourth quarter.
And for the second straight game, they were unable to keep it.
Dejounte Murray’s jumper at the buzzer wouldn’t go down and the Pelicans fell to the Utah Jazz 120-119 at the Delta Center.
The Pels (0-2) had won their last eight games against the Jazz, but lost this one despite rallying from a 15-point deficit.
“They kicked our tails early on in the game on the boards,” said Pelicans’ head coach Jamahl Mosley. “They had a lot of second chance opportunities. It was still a 10-point game in a lot of those moments. We’ve got to make sure we’re cleaning up the glass.”.
Zion Williamson scored 23 points and Saddiq Bey had 20 for the Pelicans.
Center Yves Missi, arguably the Pels’ best player so far this season, injured his left knee with 6:24 left in the second quarter and had to be helped to the locker room. Williamson appeared to have fallen into Missi’s knee on the play. The Jazz led 50-40 at that point and kept a 10-poimt lead (62-52) at halftime. Missi finished with 6 points and a blocked shot. In Wednesday’s season-opening loss to the Indiana Pacers, Missi scored 13 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocked shots.
Mosley didn’t have any updates on the injury after the game.
"It's a left knee injury and we're going to get a look at it tomorrow (Saturday) in Denver," Mosley said.
Murray and Karlo Matkovic gave valuable minutes in the third quarter when the Pels outscored the Jazz 38-24. Matkovic had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals in the quarter.
The Pelicans play the second night of a back-to-back Saturday when they play at the Denver Nuggets.
“We’ve got to bounce right back and take the lessons from this one,” Mosley said. “Obviously we’ve got a very good Denver team that we’ve got to make sure how we’re guarding, who we’re guarding, finishing possessions out. Do it all without fouling down the stretch. I think those are big keys. At the end of the game, just us being able to defend without fouling when the game is on the line.”
