The big news over the weekend was the unexpected absence of Joao Pedro from Chelsea’s squad to face Tottenham.

The forward was injured, but manager Xabi Alonso wasn’t able to give much information about how severe the problem is.

We’ve all been waiting for today’s press conference previewing the cup game against Liverpool tomorrow night for an update, and finally we got one.

Chelsea must find solutions without Joao Pedro

“He has an injury of his thigh and is going to be out for a few weeks,” Alonso said, continuing his usual tactic of giving away as little as possible.

“Let’s see how many [weeks]. He’s not ready for the next games… Of course, he’s a key player. We’ll miss him. We have to be ready to deal with the injury, starting tomorrow with Liverpool.”

It’s a huge blow for the team. We saw on Saturday how much they miss the Brazilian when he’s not fit. Not only is he our biggest goal threat, he also helps his fellow attackers play well.

This is a crucial moment for Alonso, who needs to figure out how to get this team playing well without their number 9.

In other news…

Saturday’s defeat was about more than just three dropped points. It was a very worrying step backwards for the team.

Maxence Lacroix is another Chelsea player who has been criticised for his performance against Tottenham.

Pundits on TalksSport were in shock over how Xabi Alonso set his team up.
