India bettered their best-ever medal tally at the Asian Para Games, taking their count to 114 medals, including 30 gold, in Nagoya on Friday. The Indian contingent surpassed its previous record of 111 medals, set at the Hangzhou Games in 2022, to register its highest-ever medal haul at the continental event.
India had finished the Hangzhou edition with 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals. The latest tally in Nagoya also took the country's gold medal count beyond its previous best, marking another milestone for Indian para-sport.
Para-athletics continued to play a major role in India's campaign, with Sandeep and Haney producing world-record performances to win gold on Friday.
Sandeep clocked 52.28 seconds to win the men's 400m T64 final, setting a world record. Fellow Indian Ajay Kumar claimed bronze in 53.61 seconds, also bettering the previous Games record.
Haney won gold in the men's javelin throw F37/38 final with a world-record effort of 60.49 metres, scoring 1,116 Raza points. Iran's Hormoz Seidikazpounji took silver with a throw of 50.68 metres, while China's Yu Chengjie won bronze with an Asian-record effort of 53.66 metres.
India also added silver medals through Nimisha Chakkungalparambil in the women's long jump T47 and Parmod Bijarnia in the men's 1500m T46. Nimisha recorded a best effort of 5.37 metres, finishing behind Sri Lanka's Dhananjana Wickramasinghe, who won gold with a Games-record leap of 5.52 metres.
Bijarnia clocked 4:09.65 to finish second in the men's 1500m T46 final. Sri Lanka's Puwakpitikande P. Wahumpurage won gold in a Games-record time of 4:03.25.
Para-badminton also brought India gold medals, with Nitesh Kumar winning the men's singles SL3 title after defeating compatriot Pramod Bhagat 21-18, 21-16. Bhagat settled for silver.
Naveen Sivakumar claimed the men's singles SL4 gold, beating Indonesia's Fredy Setiawan 21-9, 21-17 in 36 minutes.
India's medal tally also received a boost from para-archery, where Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sundi won gold in the men's recurve team event, defeating China 5-1.
The Indian contingent's performance in Nagoya has been built on contributions across disciplines, with para-athletics among the leading medal-winning sports. The record tally marks an improvement on India's previous best at the Asian Para Games and reflects the country's strong showing across the competition.
