Matthias Jaissle has come out swinging in the face of some stinging criticism on Tyneside - and insists he can handle the pressure of being Newcastle United boss.
The German head coach has suffered two consecutive defeats and goes into Sunday's encounter with Crystal Palace in dire need of three points to ease some of the tension at St James' Park. Jaissle endured boos at the end of the Aston Villa defeat despite making a steady start to his Newcastle career.
When asked about dealing with some early doubters, Jaissle, who took over from Eddie Howe after a turbulent summer of politics and transfer rows before the former manager's departure, said: "Well, first of all, I always said that it's a privilege to be the coach of Newcastle United.
"I would not say that's huge pressure. I would use another word - it's a great and huge responsibility to take that job.
"To also lead them throughout the negative period was something we were aware of.
"There were already positive sides at the start of the season; now there's a setback at the moment, and you need to overcome that."

Newcastle managed to produce just one shot on target in the narrow defeat against Villa and head to Palace with their firepower questioned by the club's all-time leading scorer Alan Shearer this week. The toothless display even resulted in a few boos as the teams went off at half-time last week.
Jaissle said: "Of course, during half-time you would love to say everything is perfect and you're leading 3-0, but that's rarely the case in football.
"You need to use that time. You don't need to think, and you should not think, about the pressure and something else.
"You're in a zone. You just focus on what you can influence, what tools you can provide to the players to make it better in the second half.
"After the match, it's the same. The disappointment of the fans is part of the game. They're passionate, especially our supporters. They're great, and it's also normal that they show their disappointment."
Newcastle's last away game resulted in an implosion against Coventry as Frank Lampard's team ran out 4-1 winners. Jaissle was asked if an away game was better this time around to escape some of the negativity, but when asked if he preferred playing at St James' Park or away from home, he answered: "Yes, because they are great supporters. They give us the energy, and again, this is normal in football.
They have high expectations as well, and they deserve to have these high expectations. We need to deliver."
Newcastle's last win away from home came back in August when they defeated Spurs 2-0 and when asked if it was vital to shake off their poor run on the road, after back to back 4-1 losses at Coventry and Leeds, he said: "First of all the chance is, usually, if you play better, if you perform better, it leads to a better result. This is the first step.
"Of course, there are elements within that game where you need to be smart and where the end goal is higher prioritised and that means winning. We talked about once already using certain spaces on the pitch to be clinical.
"There are elements for sure, even if you have the ball, you can talk about the no risk zone, you need to be clinical, you need to clean the situations, rather than finding smart solutions on the ground and then the opposite side you need to be clinical.
"When there is a possible shot you need to take that possibility, and that opportunity to score, so these things are clear and the players are smart enough.
"So, of course, we have a young squad and heavy defeats doesn't help for the optimism, for the confidence but we are here to support and we need to give them the optimism back. Also the mentality back to believe. Just pure belief on what they are doing and then they become stronger for sure."
