Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has been awarded NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his stellar performance in Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers. Penix tossed three touchdowns and completed 25/34 pass attempts for 213 yards while leading Atlanta to victory over a previously undefeated 49ers team.
This is the first time that the former top-10 pick from the 2024 NFL Draft has won a player of the week award, but at the rate he's been playing this season, it likely won't be his last. Penix entered the lineup in Week 3 and might have saved the Falcons' season.
Thus far, he's passed for 1,157 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception for a rating of 109.1. Penix has gone 3-2 since his return, and he played well enough to win against the Baltimore Ravens before exiting late with a rib injury.
The Falcons offense has come alive over the last five games, with Drake London and Kyle Pitts suddenly putting up numbers after a quiet first couple of weeks. London, in particular, has shined with Penix as his quarterback, recording 28 catches for 536 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Atlanta's rushing attack didn't have its usual effectiveness in Week 7, so the team put the game in Penix's hands and he delivered. One thing that is hard to miss about Penix is that he never seems rattled. If the former Washington standout is healthy and has time in the pocket, he looks like an elite quarterback.
Hopefully, Penix can keep it going against a motivated Tampa Bay Buccaneers team in NFL Week 8.
