Jannik Sinner set to have millions taken away because of little-known ATP Tour rule

Jannik Sinner faces losing a £3.3million bonus as a consequence of his ongoing injury woes. The five-time Grand Slam champion was unable to compete at the US Open due to a right knee complaint and has been absent from competitive tennis since his triumph over Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final more than two months ago. Sinner recently confirmed he had been forced to cut short his season in order to focus on his rehabilitation and prevent any further complications.

His prolonged absence from the court has allowed Zverev to displace him at the top of the ATP Tour rankings, with the German also poised to reap considerable financial rewards.

Sinner has missed three Masters tournaments this year, meaning he stands to lose the £3.3m bonus awarded to the tour's top performer, despite boasting the strongest overall record.

Zverev, meanwhile, is well-positioned to claim the £1.88m prize for finishing as runner-up, having progressed to four semi-finals and one final across the nine tournaments.

However, he must still deliver a strong showing at the forthcoming Paris Masters, where he will need to surpass Arthur Fils' performance in order to secure second place.

Zverev was recently eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Shanghai Masters, falling to eventual champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Reflecting on the loss, the reigning French Open and US Open champion commented: "I think if I feel like I could have done something more, then it's painful for me, and it always will be painful. It doesn't change what you won in the past.

"But if you feel like you've done everything that you could, and I feel like this tournament I, funnily enough, I lost, yes, to Alejandro, who people will say: 'Oh, he's ranked 20 whatever in the world'.

"He's playing well, first. Second, I feel like I've actually, in a way, maybe overachieved this week because of how much tennis I played. I carried a little bit of injury, I carried fatigue into the tournament, and I'm okay to lose to a player like this today.

"I think, again, anybody who watched the match maybe saw that I was moving a bit slower. I was maybe not running as much. But again, I'm not going to say anything new.

"I think it's okay. I played a lot of tennis, which is a good sign for me. And I was able to be injury-free this year, which is also a good sign for me."
