Alessia Russo celebrates scoring an equaliser for Arsenal against Aston Villa in the Women's Super League

Alessia Russo rescued a late draw for Arsenal against Aston Villa in the Women's Super League.

Substitute Stina Blackstenius crossed into the box and Russo flicked a header in at the far post to earn the Gunners a point.

Villa had gone ahead In the 25th minute, Chastity Grant latching on to a ball from Lynn Wilms and cruising past Steph Catley before slotting into the bottom corner.

Villa's goal came against the run of play with Arsenal dominating proceedings but unable to find a goal.

Grant was almost sent clear again before the break but Catley made a brilliant tackle to stop her run.

Kyra Cooney-Cross sent a header wide when she was unmarked in the box while a Georgia Stanway shot from 25 yards was well saved by Villa goalkeeper Akane Okuma.

Kim Little's strike from the edge of the area in the 75th minute was brilliantly tipped over by Okuma as Villa held firm amid intense Arsenal pressure before their resolve was eventually broken by Russo's header.

The result means Arsenal move up to sixth in the table while Aston Villa are eighth with both sides on 10 points.

Arsenal are yet to win at home this season, recording a fourth consecutive draw at the Emirates.

They had to come from behind to rescue a point for the third time this term and once again lacked a clinical edge.

It is a well-known problem for the Gunners - they have had 163 shots in eight league games and only eight of those have resulted in a goal.

Grant's goal was Villa's only shot in the game while Arsenal had 28 with eight of those on target.

Villa's gameplan almost worked to perfection with Brian Sorensen's side content to cede possession to Arsenal after going ahead.

After wins against Tottenham and Benfica, concerns will arise again about how Renee Sleger's side are unable to win at home when they create so many chances.
