The Washington Commanders just can’t catch a break. Since Week 6, Washington has lost wide receiver Terry McLaurin and defensive tackles Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw for the season. This week, reserve wide receiver Dyami Brown was injured in practice and could miss the rest of the season. When you add these recent injury woes to what the Commanders have dealt with since Week 1, they’re fortunate to be 2-4-1 and in the NFC East race.
On Sunday, they’ll face preseason Super Bowl favorite, the Los Angeles Rams. At 4-4, the Rams have been a disappointment and have dealt with their own injury woes. After acquiring two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett via trade in June, he played one game before a knee procedure sidelined him.
After missing seven games, Garrett appears set to return for Sunday’s Week 9 game against the Commanders.
That’s right. Washington, without star left tackle Laremy Tunsil for the season, could be Garrett’s first game back. If Garrett does suit up, it will be the first time he plays alongside fellow two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald.
“He has progressed really well, made a tremendous impact in practice on Wednesday and Thursday [and] feels really comfortable with the game plan,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said Friday, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN. “And it’s been great having him out there.”
You’d think that Garrett would be on some sort of snap limit on Sunday, since it’s his first game action in two months. We shall see.
As for Garrett, he commented on playing with Donald.
“I think the offenses really have to pick their poison,” Garrett said. “Who’s going to be freed up this play? And I think either of us are pretty good at winning one-on-one, so we’ll have some fun.”
Washington certainly hopes that fun can wait one more week.
