Albian Ajeti is enjoying a fine run of form playing at Lugano in Switzerland.
The striker was brought to Glasgow from West Ham for £5 million in 2020, but was one of several summer signings to struggle that season as Neil Lennon’s side failed in their bid for a tenth straight title.
Ajeti’s career took some time to recover. He spent a year on loan at Sturm Graz before making a permanent move to Gaziantepspor in Turkey. Neither move went particularly well.
A return to former club Basel allowed him to get back in the swing of scoring goals, but after struggling with his form last season, he was loaned out to Lugano — there, he’s now back at the top of his game.
Ajeti has established himself as the main striker at the Swiss side after four goals in his last three games. With three goals, he is the joint-top goalscorer in the UEFA Conference League.
After scoring the opener in a 3-2 win against Red Star Belgrade, he starred in their stunning 5-2 win over Getafe in Madrid. With a perfect record of six points, they sit second in the League Phase table.
At the weekend away against reigning champions FC Thun, Ajeti came from the bench to score the winner, putting his side six points clear at the top of the league with ten wins and one draw in eleven games.
It’s perhaps Ajeti’s best run of form since the end of his Hoops spell, with a side who haven’t won the title in 78 years.
Upon his exit from Glasgow, Ange Postecoglou was sympathetic about his struggles throughout his Hoops career. The ex-Hoops boss said: “Albian was probably one of a number of players who got caught in between periods.
“They came in at a really difficult time for the club, through the Covid experience as well. I can just imagine it would have been very hard for new players to settle in that time. Then I come along, and we changed direction again.
“Albian’s a good player. He just needs an opportunity. My role in that is just to make sure they have an opportunity to play their football. Just because they don’t fit in here, doesn’t mean they can’t have a really strong career somewhere else.”
