‘He Is Not a Playmaker,’ ‘He’s Not a Receiver That You Can Rely On’ — Analyst Grills Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy Amid Disappointing Season

Kansas City wide receiver Xavier Worthy was one of the Chiefs’ most disappointing performers during their embarrassing Week 7 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on the road. Worthy caught three of his six targets for a season-low 11 receiving yards.

After the game, Carrington Harrison gave a scathing assessment of Worthy’s playmaking abilities.

Analyst Slams Xavier Worthy’s Playmaking Abilities

During Monday’s segment of “The Drive” show on 96.5 The Fan, Harrison outlined his disappointment with Worthy’s performances and abilities.

“Xavier Worthy was sold to us as being the speedster guy,” Harrison said.

He added, “The take the top off the defense kinda guy. He was sold to us as a guy who could produce explosive plays. There are numerous opportunities in yesterday’s game where Xavier Worthy is being asked, ‘Hey, you just got to be better than that guy. You gotta go out and make a play.’ Yes, scheme matters. Scheme is important.”

“But sometimes, sports is simply about the guys on your team being better than the guys on their team and who can go and make more plays. Xavier Worthy has shown us now for two and a half years, he is not a playmaker. He is not a ‘speedster run past you’ kind of guy; he is not routing anybody up. He does not have reliable hands. He is not a receiver that you can rely on… This is man-to-man, who can beat who,” Harrison concluded.

Harrison further pointed to a play in which Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori ran stride for stride with Worthy on a deep incompletion.

The analyst dismissed Worthy’s famed speed, which saw him break John Ross’s 40-yard dash combine record (4.21 seconds) and increased the hype with which he entered the league.

After a stellar college football career with the Texas Longhorns, during which he earned First-team All-Big 12 honors twice, Worthy was selected No. 28 overall by the Chiefs in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Worthy had a promising rookie season, setting a Super Bowl record for most receiving yards by a rookie receiver (157 yards) in Super Bowl 59. The wide receiver finished his rookie season with 638 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on 59 receptions before an injury-limited 2025 season, when he finished with 42 receptions for 532 yards and one touchdown in 14 games.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid revealed that the team adjusted Worthy’s routes to protect his shoulder after an injury sustained in the season opener continued to bother him throughout 2025, when he finished with 532 receiving yards and 1 score.

With Rashee Rice sidelined in Week 7 and Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve, Worthy has remained one of Kansas City’s primary receiving options this season. Worthy has amassed 217 receiving yards and 1 touchdown on 24 receptions for the Chiefs this season, earning a PFN’s NFL WR Impact grade of 71.6 (No. 63 in the NFL).
