Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has given his thoughts on a possible transfer exit in the previous window after the winger was heavily linked with a move away from Anfield.
The Netherlands international was rumored to have interest from Tottenham early on in the market, but that soon switched to Manchester City, with the club swooping in to become the preferred destination for the forward if he did become available.
The future of Gakpo appeared to hinge on other potential incomings in the transfer window, with the Reds pushing hard to sign Bradley Barcola at the time, along with a right-winger, as the likes of Ibrahim Mbaye, Ismaila Sarr, and Yankuba Minteh were all linked during the summer.
However, with only Barcola making a switch, Liverpool decided against an exit for the 27-year-old, denying him a move to Man City and keeping him in the squad for the season ahead.
While that led to plenty of debate about whether it was the right call or not, with fans weighing up the potential transfer profit against the need for squad depth, Gakpo quickly proved why he was still a valuable option for Iraola to have within his squad.
The forward hit the ground running this season with two goals and four assists in his first five appearances across all competitions, showing an instant connection with Alexander Isak early on. While injury has since slowed that rate down, the star has quickly put the transfer links behind him to push on and help Liverpool moving forward.
Ahead of another important clash in the Champions League against Fenerbahce, Gakpo was put up to face the media and was asked about the failed move away from the club in the summer and whether he had something to prove after it. He responded: "No, not really.
"I think my mindset stays the same as it always has been. Try to perform. But it was quite a hectic summer regarding to a lot of topics, so I just try to enjoy football and enjoy life."
With the inner workings of the club still relatively unknown to those outside of it, Gakpo was then asked if a discussion was held about the transfer deal as it fell through.
"It was not much of a discussion was it?" the Dutchman said in response. "The decision was made and that was it."
It certainly suggests that things were out of the 27-year-old's hands when it came to the final call from Liverpool, but he hasn't shown any signs of that impacting him in the early weeks of the season so far.
While an injury has halted some of the early momentum he had, a goal against Chelsea in the League Cup last week may well help him rediscover that goal-scoring form right when the Reds need their star players fit and firing.

With two more games until the next international break, Gakpo will be hoping to leave his mark on the early months of the campaign, before the fixture schedule ramps up even further heading into the festive period.
